Yesterday i took my 5 month old girl to a pediatrician for some skin lesion. After taking her height, he said "your baby is short" :S. She is 62 cm and was born at 36 weeks. I am not uspet, as i am not tall myself, but would appreciate if moms can tell me the average height and weight for their 5 month old babies (she is 7 kilos).

Thanks.

Nope. Not overweight. Just heavier than 97% of people from her age group. I don't think doctors really worry until they are way, way off the chart. :) Is she breastfed? The chart is only appropriate for breastfed babies. If she is, it sounds like you got yourself a booby monster there. Lol. Yep boobie monster indeed!!!:) But I love every single roll and jiggle of her! At least I know she has lots of reserves to keep her going. She's my little bear cub;) Thanks for clarifying the chart for me, I never really got it! edited by moonbean on 23/10/2011 edited by moonbean on 23/10/2011

Totally agree, Kiwispiers. It's more important to watch the curve than anything else. I didn't realise that you posted the same link. I am an epidemiologist and work in international public health and health research and know that there has been a lot of discussion of removing the charts all together. They don't often tell us too much. So, no matter where your baby is on the chart, if you feel that he or she is healthy, hitting milestones and is contented and happy then everything is most likely perfectly ok.

Actually its the same chart as I linked to below and in NZ its used for ALL babies regardless of how they are fed as breastfed is regarded as being the "normal" pattern of growth. In theory it it is easier to overfeed a FF baby but being in the 97th or the 2nd etc isn't important, what is "somewhat" important is that you more or less stay on a growth curve, so they tend to look more closely if you were on the 75th and then dropped to the 2nd etc. Babies, like adults come in all shapes and sizes and the charts are just a very rough tool for keeping an eye on how they are growing, not a test you need to get more than 50 percent to pass or aim for 100% etc. Also height and weight don't need to match, my wee guy is above the 98th for length but 75th for weight, totally normal and he's kept pretty closely to his curves since birth (but of course it wiggles up and down with growth spurts etc) although he was following the 50th for weight until he was 4 months and then he went up to the 75th and stayed there.

Hahaha I just checked on the WHO chart for my girl and is above the 97th centile! So that would mean my DD is overweight?

Is she formula or breastfed? A lot of doctors use a formula fed growth chart for all babies. Breastfed babies tend to gain weight and height a bit differently and can often seem to be 'underweight'. Here is the WHO chart for breastfed babies: http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/en/ That said, no matter how she's fed, there is a wide range of 'normal' for any baby. I say go with your mama instincts. If you feel that she is fine and healthy then she most likley is. If you feel that the doctor isn't really making you all that happy with his charts and guidelines then I would hunt around for one that you are more comfortable with.

My DD is 5 months, just took her to see pediatrician today, she is 69 cm and her weight is 9.4 kg. Don't worry too much, as long as she is developing well.

oh and here is the link for the average weights http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/Files/wellchild-growthcharts/$file/girls-weight-0-1-years.pdf basically 50% of 5 month olds are between 6.5 and 7.5 kg, so she is average weight (close to the 50th). Since she was born early though, if you adjust to her true age, she moves up a bit.

At 4 months old my DD was 63cm and 8.2kg. at 6.5 months she was 68cm and 10.4kg. (When she was born she was 51cm and 2.8kg - if that helps!)

Here is a link to the chart your pediatrician should be using http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/Files/wellchild-growthcharts/$file/girls-length-0-2-years.pdf So she is around 25th centile, meaning around 3/4 of babies are taller at this age and 1/4 are shorter than her. edited by kiwispiers on 22/10/2011
