Can anyone advise what I should pack in my hospital bag? I've been told I need to bring everything for the baby & I. I'm from the US and in the hospital there diapers, wipes, post postpartum pads & small toiletries are provided. I will be delivering at Medcare Hospital.
Thanks!

Thanks Apricot. I will brief my hubby about the procedure... You have given me a news.. about the medical students being there in the delivery room... I will check about it on my next visit... Thanks a lot...

To get a private room at Latifa hospital, your husband, or whoever else accompanies you when you're admitted to hospital, needs to first state you want a private room so your name goes on the list. Then he needs to visit same admissions/ patients affairs office each morning to renew your name on the waiting list for private rooms. Most private rooms vacate btwn 12pm-4pm, sometimes 9.30-10am. Your husband may visit you n baby from 8am-9pm. He can't sleep overnight on any of the wards, not even in VIP rooms! I ask to get placed in the care of the team of Dr Alia Obaid at Latifa Hospital. I write out in my birth plan, and have this birth plan put into my patient file, that I don't want any medical students present in delivery room, you might want to consider that.

Apricot, thanks a lot.... That clears up lots of my confusion... so i think i get everything in my hospital bag :) can i ask you one more thing, i have heard people telling its difficult to get private room in Latifa. Do you know what the procedure is? Will they allow husband to stay back in a private room? Sorry, I know these questions are not relevant in this thread. But I do not know how to check these with you otherwise. Thanks Aish

Hi.. do anyone know if Latifa hospital provides any basic amenities package during delivery? I do not want to be carrying unnecessary stuff to hospital and duplicate on the stuff what they may be providing. With Latifa, I dont think i may get a private room, so i dont want to pack on the available space in the sharing room. They don't provide amenities during labor. After delivery, you get free diapers, baby is clothed in the hospital's baby gowns and blankets (unless you provide clothes for nurses to change the baby into before daily morning bath), hospital nightgowns for mom to use during stay, free maternity pads and disposable panties, you may get some sample sized baby toiletries but don't count on it. I was in sharing for 5 hrs, then moved to a private room when it became available. If you are in a sharing room, you will get a metal locker on wheels to put your stuff in.

I would REALLY bring your own (comfy, cotton, okay to throw away after) undies. Those horrid mesh things they have at the hospital still give me nightmares. Brr. Don't bathe your baby at the hospital btw. It's really not necessary and in fact recommended to wait as long as a week or more after birth until you give them the first proper bath. They are born with a protective layer on their skin, don't scrub it off. :) edited to add, bring something to sit on for the car ride home! A breastfeeding pillow would work. Unless you're very lucky, you'll have stitches (unless you have a c-section ofc) and let me tell you it is NOT fun to have to sit on those in a car. Ouch. edited by ChuckyDucky on 22/07/2013

I only needed baby clothes, blanket/ wrap and a couple of sets of clothes for myself, and phone/ iPad charger. Didn't need to take toiletries as hospital (city) provided everything, incl cotton wool and bowl to top and tail baby. But take your own wipes if you plan to use these, they had J&J ones which I didn't like. Good luck!

If you're planning to BF, nursing pillow really helps so you might want to bring that too. :)

I delivered at Medcare this March( c-section) Following was provided: Mother: Toileteries(shampoo, lotion, conditioner);disposable panties, hospital grade sanitary pads Baby: baby swaddling cloth, hospi blankie I packed my own toileteries, along with lil makeup as I expected loads of visitors;hospi panties were easy to wear and discard so didnt get to use my own panties, hospital pads were fabulous and they gave me loads to take home too; I had to ask my husband to get some breast pads as I had started leaking very badly from day 2, once the baby latched properly. For Baby, being a fusspot... I had asked nurses in surgery to take my washed and clean swaddling cloth which we got for the baby and our blanket for swaddelling too. Camera( still and movie), phone charger, and eye patch if possible to sleep well.... Pls do sleep as much as you can whilst in the hospital as it will be the last time you will sleep uninterrupted for next 5 yrs or so! I dont think taking a vase would help as my docs didnt allow any flowers inside the room...they were all stacked up outside in the corridor. The cafe downstairs is not that great for small treats, so you can take some munchies( for me it was apples that settled my post natal cravings) A set of clothes to go home in( comfy and photogenic)...loads of pics will be clicked of homecoming , so you better look wow! i had to take 5 sets of onesies for bub as I was in hospital for 3 nights..kept a set extra, nappies( stage 1),burp cloth, muslin and cotton to keep your bbs face clean, nappy cream( i gave it to the nurses to ensure he had the cream on his bum from day one to avoid rashes),fragrance free wipes....

I delivered at City but assume all the hospitals are very similar. I wish I had taken a lot less and with #2 will be limiting my bag to: - a few snacks for the delivery - toilet bag with very little in it - but def need my eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss to make myself feel better - one set of clothes to pop into if I feel up to going to the coffee shop (doubt it) - one set of clothes to go home - some disposable knickers (hospital ones not so nice) - all in ones and wraps for baby - camera, ipad and charger - du card for the wireless connection - gift for DD1 - couple of plastic containers to use as vases if I am lucky enough to get flowers (hospital didn't have them) Didn't need lots of clothes as stayed in hospital gowns the whole time (heaps easier for feeding etc); soaps, shampoos were there and everything for baby was provided (incl clothes if we had needed them). I am sure someone who delivered at Medcare will confirm if this will work for there as well
