We have a 2.5 month old DD with bad reflux and is now on twice daily Zantac to help. She's gone from the 50% for weight to the 5% and has only gained one pound in 2 months so the doctor is now treating her reflux. She's been on Similac Gas and Fussiness formula since she was born but now we are dealing with what appears to be a milk intolerance and the Similac is milk based. Several of my friends in the states have suggested switching formulas to a soy base but none of the brands we have in the states match up to the brands here and I get so confused when I'm at the store.

Can someone recommend a good non-milk based formula that I can get here? Thank you!

just so you know, the Zantac won't actually stop the spitting up, it will just neutralize the acid so that when she does spit up it doesn't hurt. the motilium makes hr tummy empty again faster so less time to reflux, however rice cereals etc make it slower so go figure. Thy tend to start off with the most simple/least side effect meds and won't move on to things like that unless it is still a problem.

My baby is 1.5 months old and she was on the same Similac Gas and Fusiness formula but had really bad cramps, some reflux and she cried very badly in the evening. I changed the formula and started using Aptamil 1 and she is much better now.

Also, are you sure the reflux is under control? If not, ask your doctor to prescribe a PPI for your LO like Losec or Nexium, but make sure the dosage is enough to control the reflux - 10 mg a day broken into two doses to begin with, and increase if needed. Also ask about motilium to speed up gastric emptying. And if your DD's reflux is very bad, I recommend you see a pediatric GI. edited by lemondrops on 10/10/2011 I don't think it's under control yet. The doctor said it could take up to a week to see results of the Zantac and Thursday will be a week but we are still dealing with quite a bit of spit up. Not as bad as before but still lots. The other issue is that she was only eating 20 oz a day and the doctor said she should be eating 30 oz a day. Since the Zantac she's up to 26-28 oz a day so it's getting better. I've never heard of Motilium, what is that? She also takes Infancol with each bottle.

I have heard camel milk is really good if you are allergic to regular milk, though I have no idea if this can be used for small ones. Might ask your doctor !

Have you thought about Goats milk? Not sure, but they say it's the closest to Human milk. you can get it in formula overseas, not sure about here.

Its not recommended you switch to a soy based formula before the age of 6 months as you risk developing a soy allergy as a result (which can be a big problem for life as there is soy hidden away in all sorts of things) The official recommendation is that you go to a hydrolised formula, such as Neocate or you may get away with one of the partially hydrolised ones.

I'm sorry I can't help with the milk intolerance but our 4 month old ds also has reflux and is on Zantac twice daily too. He is also on formula and after trying quite a few he is now on Aptimal 1 mixed with Aptimal AR, we do 4 scoops of regular and 3 scoops of AR formula and it seemed to help. I believe there have been some posts recently on soy formula, maybe search some of "M"'s posts as I think she had the same issues. I hope you find something that works for your little one.
