I believe the accepted wisdom is now that calpol should only be given in the event of post vaccination fever. Not before it appears, purely as a preventative measure. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6336370/Children-should-not-be-given-common-painkiller-after-a-vaccine.html

DD's first few vaccinations were a little tough. She screamed and she was so little! But all was forgotten in less than 5 mins. At her 12 months shots, she took em like a champ and aside from an indignant scream on HOW DATE YOU HOLD ME DOWN, we were back to normal within 30 seconds. Honestly, its tougher on the mums!

I've always had to take DD alone to have her vaccinations :( The first time was the hardest, but I had to put on a brave face as having 2 crying babies did not make for a good sight :\: A quick pop on the breast helps soothe them very quickly! And you will be surprised how quickly they toughen up ;) The next time we went for vaccinations, DD only let out a little cry and then was flashing her toothless smile at the nurses! I also request that they do both vaccinations at the same time ie. 2 nurses, one on each thigh, so that the needles go in together and she only feels the "pain" once...if that makes sense?! You'll do fine Stovetop, it's over before you even blink!

hehe.. the 1st 2 months of jabs.. they don't usually result in any fever.. but do keep a bottle of calpol at home.. I was advised when DD had her 4 month jab onwards to either immediately give calpol once we got home, ie no need to wait til she's got any fever or to give before the injection at the doctor..I waited til we got home to give her.. Sorry, sorry, sorry... I just didn't link the syringe thing to oral drops as all...*blushes It went alright. For the first shot, she didn't realise for 2 secs that it was her thigh they were poking into, so we were just waiting for her to react. Poor thing cried for about 15 mins and then dozed off. Hoping there's no fever etc now.

The nurse gave us calpol and a syringe and advised us to give LO one dose once we reached home, which we did. Sorry Kermi if this is yet another foolish q, but we have to prick them ourselves too later at home????? Syringe to administer calpol. Sorry to scare you, should have explained better. How did it go today?

NO!!!! Definitely not stovetop!!! I think she means calpol in a syringe to squirt into her mouth later on... Saves buying a whole bottle! Only thing u have to give at home is cuddles.

I've come to the conclusion that its harder on us mummies than it is on the babes. I have a phobia with needles so DH always holds DD when she gets them, but her last lot of injections I had to hold her as DH couldn't be there. The crying is over within seconds (in our experience) and as meals said, offer some milk to help soothe your baby. The nurse even gave out jellybeans...........for me for being so brave! ;)

DD will have her 2 month vaccinations today. Like a lot of chicken mums, I'm more scared than she is. Is it hard to soothe them after all the pricks? Is there anything I can do to make her more comfy afterward, except to hold her close and snuggle up? I was the same :) To an extend that DH had to go inside with LO and I waited outside of the treatment room. Once finished, we gave LO the bottle, as Meals said. The nurse gave us calpol and a syringe and advised us to give LO one dose once we reached home, which we did. LO slept more that day and was otherwise just as normal.

It will all be over in a very short period of time - she won't blame you or anything like that! Lots of cuddles, be careful of not bumping the injection site as it can be tender for a few days. Her sleep will be out of wack and she'll be cranky. When she's first given the injection - either offer the boob or a bottle to sooth her. If she's irritable afterwards, use baby calpol and it will make her much more comfortable. Be ready to carry and cuddle lots. Think of the long term benefits and immunity you're giving her!!! Go be a brave mummy and remember, it's ok to be a little teary when she cries.
