Hi

I am 8 weeks pregnant with my second baby and am in the grip of the most horrendous sickness. It's all I think about from the moment I wake up to the moment I fall asleep and I am physically throwing up somewhere between 5 and 10 times a day. I began taking Navidoxine (over the counter anti sickness meds) about a week ago and they really are not making a difference. I asked my doctor if there was anything stronger but he said that's about the best there is. I have tried every natural remedy there is, and believe me I don't want to be taking medication, but i have a 9 month old to look after. Does anyone know of other options for relief I can approach my doctor about. I am at my wits end.

Thanks

Oh dear I know what you are going through, I am now in week 17 and things are going slowly better, although I still threw up twice today... The tips below regarding small and regular meals are useful, but for me were not enough. I don't know if you are struggling more with food or beverages? For me (still) fluids are the most difficult, and oddly enough, drinking plain water is the worst, so I've cut that out on advice of my doctor, and now turn to juices / milk and even soda's, although I never used to drink them before my pregnancy. At this moment I'm just happy if any fluids stays in! Lukewarm soup seems to provide a good source of food / drinks to. My doctor started me on Zofran, which helped in the beginning but after a while didn't seem to work so well. Later, I switched to Primperan (first three times a day, slowly decreasing to once a day). The big advantage is that it makes you even more tired and sleepy, and you shouldn't drive after taking it. I don't know if you are on any pregnancy vitamines, but my doctor told me to stop those as well, as apparently they are very heavy to digest. She told me only to take folic acid for the first three months, and vitamine B6 as it should also help against the sickness. I wish you all the best. There is one small comfort: there seems to be a correlation between morning sickness and a reduced risk for miscarriages. And my SIL who is studying to become a doctor also told me that there is a positive correlation between morning sickness and intelligent children...

I swore by lucozade. I had an eggcup full each time I felt seedy. Dear knows what the glucose intake was like, mind you but it worked!! Hope you feel better soon. :)

Hi KatieW1, I also had terrible MS until around 24 weeks, vomiting was around 4 times a day, not to mention the constant nausea and tiredness, hunger despite not wanting to eat etc. The worst days of my life let me tell you! I don't have a LO yet so it would have been somewhat different to your situation but I worked about everyday through it which was so so tough. I started on ginger tablets and ginger lollies but they made me sick after a week or so. Before I started taking navidoxine at 14 weeks these things worked; dry crackers near the bed for before bed and after waking, never allowing my tummy from being empty, sucking on hard candies for the same reason (try preggie pops if you haven't already), coconut water (fresh coconut from spinneys, cut hole off the top and drank the water) and avoiding fatty foods of any type. I tried to stop the Navidoxine at around 20 weeks but it came back quickly, so kept on it till 27 weeks. It didn't solve it entirely but made life a lot more bearable. I really hope it eases off soon. All the best and hang in there.

I had the WORST morning sickness with my 2nd one too. Navidoxine didnt help for me either. Try ginger beer, worked for me for the first 4 months at least!

Are you able to eat? Are you eating lots of small meals? I found the key was never leaving myself with an empty stomach. My 'morning sickness' (what a laugh!!) was so bad that it even woke me up during the night. I needed a stash of plain dry biscuits (jatz etc) by the bed. Do you have another adult you could call on to help look after the little one? You need lots of rest so be sure to lie down when your baby naps during the day. The housework can wait!!

try sucking on frozen crystalized ginger and ice chips. It might give you some relief. as for medication, I really believe that the Dr's hands are tied. I have heard about Zofran too.

Sea Bands - They are wristbands primarily used for travel/sea sickness sufferers, I had terrible nausea with my 1st and was compelled to drive long distances daily to visit clients, I tried everything just like you and the only thing that ever helped me was these bands (and constant snacking)
