thx for the tip nams. I'll check it out at Damas Farasha - at that age did you use normal backings on the earrings your DD wore?

in response to those asking if it hurts, i had DDs ears pierced at 6 months. She cried when i had to hold her tight (her head with one hand and hands n body with the other) but her crying did not change when the doctor did the piercing. She stopped crying as soon as i held her properly. They used emla numbing cream before doing it but she was completely normal for the rest of the day and slept like usual that night. Sooo... i feel if it hurt her then her cry would have increased / changed when it was done or she would have been cranky that day or not slept well that night... and none of those things happened.

Damas has some pretty baby earrings with screw backs.... They are called my first diamond or something and are in 18K gold with the tiniest of diamond in them. You can check them out.

not wanting to stir the pot on this...but, for those who have pierced their babies ears Im curious to know what types of earrings you used? I've read they should be surgical steel or 14K gold. Im more concerned about the backing...did anyone use the safety type screwback posts (as opposed to the kind of backings we adults may use)? If so, did you find them here in Dubai? DD has been given a ton of "baby" earrings but none are screw back and Im wondering if I need to hunt some down? How soon after the initial piercing could you change the first set? Many thanks.

My daughters were born in Dubai and they had their ears professionally pierced when they were 3 months old at the French Clinic on the Village Mall on the Beach Road. None of my girls cried on the procedure. I highly recommend their service. Actually my mum could not believe why did it take me so long to have it done, while mother-in-law found it shocking for having it done so early - LOL! edited by dxb_dxb on 29/05/2011

In my home country the girls will leave the maternity already with their ears pierced. It is a common custom in South America, India and Arab countries I believe. But also in Spain, Portugal and France. Actually I just came to question it after I moved abroad, I have never seen it as an issues.

I wouldn't pierce my baby's ears but to be honest I am always taken aback by how judgemental some people are about it and the hysterical overreactions. I have even seen threads on another forum calling it child abuse and to be honest, I think, oh please! I remember having my ears pierced aged 8 (after begging my mother for months, and was so proud of my big girl earrings afterwards!) and yes it did hurt, but so does a vaccination, and we have all seen how well our babies take those. My little guy has forgotten all about his injection by the time we leave the clinic. If my mum had pierced my ears when I was a baby or toddler I wouldn't have held it against her or felt abused. When I see little babies with earrings I see that it is something that is normal within a certain culture / social circle, much like shaving babies heads or kohl eyeliner in some cultures. It doesn't look normal or nice to me, but I feel happy for those babies that they have the priviledge of belonging to a family and community and parents that care enough about them to take them through what they regard as being rites of passage. In fact I feel much the same about ear piercings as about parents dressing their babies in stiff uncomfortable dresses or jeans with non-elasticated waistbands or little patent leather shoes or woollen sweaters in the middle of summer.... I think it must be very uncomfortable for the baby but the parents mean well and since it is not causing any long term harm it is none of my business!!!! PS unlike not using a car seat, oh don't get me started on that, just the thought sends my blood pressure shooting through the roof - it seems to be 60% of the cars with children I see, including some Westerners who would never take that risk in their own countries!!!!! Now that I don't understand...

if I see a baby/child with pierced ears I think to myself that the parents have purposely caused their chid pain just so they will look "pretty" and how shallow is that? always girls as well, don't see many toddler boys running around with bits of metal sticking out of their ear lobes do we?

Its a bit like the circumcision debate to be honest. (I wouldn't personally do either to my infant but I don't feel that strongly against others choosing too) I had mine done at 12, in my culture a small child with earrings would be seen to be "s#xualised" a bit like if they were wearing makeup, you just don't see it and usually girls are not allowed to until they reach a certain age, so I think there are cultural differences at play here too. I had mine done with a gun and it didn't hurt a lot at the time (like a nasty pinch followed by burning) but it got quite sore afterwards for about a week. I don't wear earrings now though and wish I didn't have the holes. It wouldn't be a bad idea to give your child a dose of panadol (calpol, tylenol, pamol etc) 20 minutes before to make it less painful but it will definitely still hurt.

I had mine done when I was 12. I had to beg my mum to let me have them done. Both my girls had their ears pierced when they were around 7 / 8, they asked me. My GD was around 18 months old. Yet my mums friends always said if we were suppose to have holes in our ears then we would have been born with them!!!! We are all different, I dont think there is a wrong and right here.

guns cause more trauma to the ear because they basically force a blunt stud through the earlobe Not necessarily true - I got mine done with a gun and they used pointed studs, which then obviously get left in the ear. I think the sterilisation argument is borderline academic, because with a gun, only the stud enters the ear and isn't then used on someone else (doesn't mean to say that the stud shouldn't be sterile and the gun kept clean), whereas a needle is able to be sterilised, but is used time and time again, so definitely needs to be!

I just got my DD's ear pierced. It was kind of hard because they offer this service mostly in hospitals and clinics. Many jewerly shop owners inform me that they used to offer this service until the Dubai Municipality imposed a new rule regarding this. Only doctors or specialists are allowed to pierce ears. In Dubai Mall (the Gold souk); there is only one shop where you can get your ear pierced. However, on Friday, the person comes only late afternoon. Same thing the Pharmacy in Ibn Battuta; the person comes at night. I do not know about Claire but curious to know if the person is fully qualified and authorized by the Municipality. Your best chance is to go to a clinic.

Thanks sham... Bisha, why find somewhere that uses a needle as opposed to a gun? Hi, it's the same Bisha, but I changed my email address so my previous account got deleted. There's an excellent argument for needles over guns at [url=http://tattoo.about.com/cs/psafety/a/piercing_guns.htm'>About.com[/url'> The main arguments are that guns cannot be properly sterilized; the person using the gun will not have been properly trained to do body piercing (anyone who does professional piercing will use a needle); and guns cause more trauma to the ear because they basically force a blunt stud through the earlobe whereas a piercing needle is extremely sharp so it does less damage.

Hi sham, How old was your little one when you did it? Did she scream the place down? Thanks.... Sorry for the late response... DD was 2 yrs old when she got it done. She cried not because of the pain more to due with having 2 strangers on each side (crowding her) so that they can pierce at the same time after that she was fine and they gave antiseptic cream in case of infection luckliy she had no problems so overall they were clean and caring.. HTH

Lots of ladies here recommend Emla numbing cream for injection sites and waxing. It might make the procedure less painful for your DD. Yep - definitely use this. It's cheap to buy from the pharmacy and if you put it on about 30 mins before and pop a little bandaid over the top it'll number the ear lobe. I think a few of the medcare clinics do it too? Make sure you get decent quality poles for her ears so she doesn't get any reaction.

I know that my mother's justification for having mine done was that I would have them done eventually anyway, so it was better to do it while I was too young to remember the pain. I don't remember the pain either and I had them done when I was 12. It's actually a fact that we can't remember pain, at whatever stage in life. We can sometimes remember having been in pain (as in "well, ofc it must have hurt"), but not the actual pain itself... and thank goodness, otherwise we'd do far, far less than we do and live in fear of what might happen! There was a school of thought that babies couldn't feel [i'>any[/i'> pain, but that's quite obviously been debunked (duh!).

Also, my mother is from a place where ear piercing for baby girls is a cultural norm, and I'm grateful that she gave me that little tiny link to a part of my history.

I normally steer clear of these threads as I think it's each to their own. However, I am curious. If you're concerned she might scream the place down, does that not indicate the procedure might cause her pain? And if local anaesthetic is required, does that not mean you're going to have her hurt? I don't mean to offend. I just truly don't understand. I hate the thought of DS being in pain if he has an accident and I can't imagine wanting to hurt him intentionally.

Well then feel free to be grossed out by me, because my Mexican mama got my ears pierced when I was just a couple of months old. I still have the original piercings and am glad I never had to have them redone. I think it's cool that my ear piercings are almost as old as I am! I don't remember it, obviously. Pain is all about perception and memory and since I don't remember being in pain, then to my mind having my ears pierced didn't hurt at all. I actually find it quite offensive to think that someone would be repulsed by my baby pictures. I love them, earrings and all. To the OP - I wouldn't recommend Claire's, or anywhere in the mall. If the pharmacies will do it, have it done there. I believe some doctors will do it. If possible, find somewhere that uses a needle, not a gun.

OH I sooooo don't understand that.... must really be a cultural thing. I couldn't imagine doing something painful like that to my kid and personally I think it looks awful too. Each to their own, but it gives me the heeeejeebees!
