Ultimate sun protection cream/spray - what do you use for your LO? What do you recommend?

We're taking DD (nearly 10 months old) on a beach holiday at the end of this month and I'm keen to make sure that I'm armed with adequate sun protection for her. She's a very squirmy little thing and hates getting dressed so I would rather not dress her in the all-in-one swim/SPF protection suits but opt for bikini bottoms and big sunhats with lots of shade and sun protection cream/spray.

The key boxes that I'm looking to tick are:

* ultimate sun protection
* minimal run-in-eye irritation
* ease of application (spray vs. rub on cream?)
* not too sticky

What do you use for your LO? What would you recommend?

TIA

D

Ahhh if you see another 10month old it won't be us. We go next week for a week. We can't wait!!! Does your LO drink formula? I'm not sure whether to take my formula tin and use the tap water there to boil, or if I should just take enough pre made formula cartons to see us through? At this stage I'm leaning towards the cartons...

I've seen some suits in mothercare in Dubai mall and mirdiff mall and also in babyshop in MOE but that was a few weeks ago. edited by waterbaby on 17/08/2011

Thanks for the good advice everyone. Rebecca W, yes, I also like Boots Soltan for me so was already considering that one. I think I may buy both a Soltan Kids and Banana Boat this week so that I have a few days to test them on DD's skin. It would be beyond stupid to get to our destination only to find that DD was allergic to her sun protection. I'm see your point Waterbaby, Kiwiwispers and Jag re UV swim suits. Any idea where I can get a really good one? I saw some a couple of weeks ago in Just Kidding. It really would make sense to take it with us - I wouldn't forgive myself if DD got burnt. Finally Shellly, we're off on the 30th - should I look out for another +-10 month old on the flight? How funny would that be! :)

If you can get anyone to bring it out (i know that's not always possible) then the Superdrug Kids roll on one is good. My sister uses it on her two boys as well as the uv swim suits. I agree with the other posters in that if you can get your LO into a uv swim suit, then that is good protection and means that your LO has double protection along with the sun cream.

agree with jag, sunscreen will never give the same protection as the suits, buy a little shade tent too and avoid the middle of the day when sun is strongest..

Even though your LO wiggles when you put the suit on, I would still suggest putting one on as well as a hat and sun screen. A bikini bottom really is not enough to protect them! Their skin is so new and sensitive at 10 months and should really be protected at all costs. The rays don't only effect them above, but they get reflected off the water and other things as well. I have also yet to see a 10 month old keep a big floppy sun hat on without trying to pull it off! Your choice, but your LO is not old enough to tell you when they have had enough sun, and as a mom of 2 little water babies, I know how easily they can get burnt.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-134252/What-ingredients-sun-cream-health.html Health-conscious and organic cosmetic companies now have suncream ranges which keep irritating or potentially toxic suncream ingredients to a minimum but are still effective at blocking out UV rays. For any product to quote an SPF, it must have a listed protection ingredient that is Government-approved. The safest suncreams will use the least irritating ingredients from this list, such as titanium oxide or cinnamates derived from cinnamon oil. You should also look out for natural formulations that are rich in vitamin or herbal antioxidants as these protect the skin from free-radical damage caused by exposure to UV light. Be aware that the list of ingredients in any suncream should not be too long - say, up to 15 ingredients.The more ingredients, the more likely you are to have a sensitive reaction. We recommend MD Formulations Total Daily Protector (SPF15) £12 for 75ml. This contains the strong reflector, zinc oxide, yet rubs in well. It is has no smell, and is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. Piz Buin Allergy (SPF8 and 15), £11.79 for 200ml, contains titanium dioxide and many hypoallergenic ingredients. The Edelweiss Sun Lotion range by Green People (SPF8, 15 and 20), £13.99 for 200ml, (tel: 01444 401444) contains titanium dioxide to deflect UVA light and cinnamon extract to reflect UVB radiation as well as an antioxidant-rich herbal base. Dr Haushka Sunscreen Lotion (SPF8, 15 and 22, tel. 01386 792622 for stockists) and Natrasun (SPF15, mail order, tel: 0870 8720121) contain only natural ingredients and their antioxidant properties will help to boost the skin's ability to fight damage from UV radiation.

Boots Soltan is always the best for me. Being from the UK I know Boots have a fantastic range and can be trusted, they have a specific Baby range suitable for sensitive skin and obviously with high factors. Don't think they do spray as it may go in Babies eyes etc but it rubs in really well. Also Boots have started to sell swim nappies which can be hard to find in UAE. It may be worth checking Ibn Battuta branch as they have a75% clearance going on and they definitely had Soltan!

There's a banana boat spray that you can buy at waitrose that is absolutely brilliant! It only takes about 15 seconds to coat the whole baby and is spf 70. You just spray, don't even need to rub. A few minutes after application it's not sticky. We use the regular 70 one and not the one that's specifically for kids though, because for some reason the one for kids has parabens in it while the regular one doesn't. We usually use that on ds's body and mustella on his face, just because i worry that the other one might burn if it goes in his eyes.

I found Banana Boat to be the nicest to apply (no greasy residue, etc), but now that they're a bit older, I use my own sun-screen (still factor 30 or 50) which is the clear Nivea spray - spray, no rubbing, just let it dry, then 10 minutes later reapply a second coat.

I usually use the spf 50. Either the banana boat or coppertone. Its the pink bottle. Some may have some natural ones to recommend though
