Hi ladies

My 6 week old lo is really suffering from terrible wind pain esp at night. He moans, pulls he legs up and is generally uncomfortable and really can't settle. Went to see my dr and he suggested bonnisol but that seemed to make him bring up his food so have tried infacol and gripe water for 2 weeks now and not really seeing any improvement. I'm breastfeeding and find it hard to get any wind up after a feed it usually happens a good 30 mins after if at all.

Would really appreciate any ideas you may have on how to help my LO.

X

Fantastic advice and things seem to be improving! LO slept for 5 hours last night, without too much wind disturbance. I've continued with the infacol, try and feed with LO upright, burp after 2 mins then let him tell me when he has wind. Found that just sitting him upright looking at me works really well but also over the shoulder then lying him down for a minute then sitting upright. For bottom wind I do bicycle legs, push his knees gently into tummy and pull his legs up like I'm changing his nappy. Feel like I'm getting there we still have our moments but it's so much better then it was :0)

Try dentinox, its disgusting to taste but works much better and faster than infacol

If you have an over-abundant supply and he's struggling to latch or breath whilse feeding - try feeding in a semi-recumbant position - i.e lie back about 45 degrees and lay him across your chest on his belly to feed. Gravity only encourages the milk to flow more quickly and this way it's working uphill. Another way I found to burp my LO's was to feed them, then lie them down on their backs along my legs. Leave them there for about 5 mins then bring them up and over my shoulder - would help the gas get to the top of the belly. Also, when you put your LO over your shoulder - make sure you're gently pushing your shoulder into the bottom of their belly and rub upwards or pat firmly. My LO's were all windy bub's. It does ease eventually... promise!

Some great advice but just wanted to add...my LO found a bath very soothing. I'd get in with him and lie him on my chest in a nice warm deep bath. Some days he had about 4 baths ;-) I also used something called Telement drops, I still have some if you are near me in Mirdif, you're welcome to try them. Keep an eye on your diet too. With DS 1 I had to give up cows milk, garlic and coke. DS 2 it was garlic and anything tomatoey! If u have a sling, carry bub in a sling. Was a godsend for me. If you don't have one, get one...hehehe.... Or again, you're welcome to borrow mine.

a friend of mine suggested boiling dill seeds in water and the mother drinking it... this does something (dont know what! lol) to the breast milk and reduces wind/hiccupping i didnt try it in the end, but u can get the dill seeds in choitrams.... good luck x

Also the best position I found for burping was the sit my baby on his bottom and then gently sway him around in a circular motion. Tummy-time helps them work the gas out too.

This might sound silly but try burping BEFORE the feed. I found I could get more burps this way (and it helped stop my baby from refluxing). A lot of what they burp up is air swallowed when they are crying or doing things other than feeding. If you have an oversupply baby could be getting an excess of foremilk which can cause lactose intolerance-like symptoms. A friend had to pump (and dump) for 5 minutes before a feed to get rid of the excess foremilk (and then feed just 1 side per feed)

Wow thanks so much ladies some fantastic advice, also good to know that others have been through what we are going through. Winding more whilst feeding seems to have produced a lot more burps however he still has pain passing the bottom burps and is not a happy baby when I interrupt his feed :( BFC I knew I had an overabundant supply but had no idea this could be causing the gas problem, seems like it may take a while to slow down!

Lots of possibilities you might want to consider here: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/gassybaby.html Also, bit of a long shot, but how's his latch? Has he ever been checked for tongue-tie? It *might* be that he's taking in more air than he knows how to deal with. If you don't resolve it and it's really making him uncomfortable, it might be something you'd like to get checked.

since you are bf it could be something you are eating, i changed my diet around because my dd went through the same thing. gripe water helped to ease the pain a little, the biggest improvement was when i gave up dairy, and i stopped eating broccoli and legumes in the 1st 3 month just because, well we all know the bean rhyme...

Hi Sunflower81, my DS went through a similar problem at around 6 weeks. I tried to keep him upright or walk around with him, after a feed. I also brought his knees into his tummy and gently applied some pressure, causing the wind to escape by the rear exit:). I still do this when needed. My maternal nurse said not to get too concerned if DS did not burp, in that it will escape later, via previously mentioned exit.

Perhaps try feeding for a couple of minutes, then burp him (he will not be happy at the interruption of course but just keep patting his back or whatever until you hear him burp) and then feed again for a couple of minutes and burp..... Someone suggested this to me and it worked so may be worth a shot for you too.
