9 Things That Make Us Dislike Dubai's Residents

Living in Dubai can afford us many luxuries and experiences we'd not be able to enjoy if we lived anywhere else, which more often than not we use to our advantage to make friends online jealous of our lavish adventures (don't deny it).

9 Things That Make Us Dislike Dubai's Residents

But between the stereotypes we're so often labelled with, there's some home truths that many of us are actually a little guilty of. Ultimately, while Dubai provides plenty of opportunities, our lifestyles here can also instill some bad habits in us.

As a result, here's nine of the most common ones we think really do get on people's nerves... And they're also nine that we've all done at one point or another...

Why we hate dubai residents 1

1. Talking over films/Using phones in the cinema

This particular bad habit is infuriating. There's a reason that all cinemas show a 'switch your mobile phone off' rule before any film begins, as using them is a nusiance for those trying to watch the film around you. This includes texting to, because yes, we can see that very bright screen of yours in the corner of our eyes. Even without a phone in hand, please refrain from conversing with your friend during the film, too.

2. Rubber-necking while driving

While humanity may have a curious instinct to slow down whenever they drive by a crash site or incident, it's important to remember not to. Not only is it extremely disrespectful to anyone involved in the accident you're trying so desperately to see the details of, but it can cause delays and potential danger to other drivers around you who are also attempting to pass by the site safely.

3. Metro and lift etiquette

There's two types of people in Dubai; those that politely wait for everyone to get off the metro before entering, and those that will barge in as soon as the doors open. Don't panic guys, you do have a couple of minutes before the Metro departs. This goes for lifts to, it's polite to let those exiting the lift to do so before you attempt to squeeze yourself in past them.

4. Lack of lane management

Going slow in the fast lane, going fast in the slow lane, undertaking, middle-lane driving... These are all bad habits that we've all done at least once (daily) on Dubai's roads that fall into this category.

5. Jumping the queue

Whether it's in a petrol station, in the restrooms or in the shop, skipping to the front of the line is not okay. It's rude, disrespectful and arrogant to think you are above waiting like the rest of us. So don't be surprised if you're politely asked to go to the back of the queue by someone waiting or a member of staff.

6. Forgetting basic manners

Forgetting to say please and thank you, primarily. Say good morning to your colleage, or smile at the stranger passing by. If you're driving, let the pedestrian cross the street instead of trying to rush by, hold the door open for the person behind you. Just be a nice, decent human being and don't forget your manners. They do matter, you know.

7. Tail-gating/Flashing drivers

Not only is it dangerous, it's extremely rude and can be distracting for drivers around you. It's simple... Don't do it.

8. Shopping while their car fills with petrol

Your car filled with gas about 10 minutes ago, and yet you're still picking up your favourite magazine, some bread and milk and other groceries in the station while we all wait outside for you to move your car. We have an idea... Why don't you stay in your car, wait until it's filled, and the complete the (very) short drive to the parking bays directly outside of the petrol station, after which you can then shop until the cows come home. Please don't leave us waiting for you, otherwise you'll probably hear lots of car horns as you wander back outside.

9. Littering in public

It's horribly sad to see much-loved places like Al Qudra and the desert to be destroyed by a few individuals that ruin it for the masses by littering. It's not the most romantic view out on the sand dunes to enjoy when there's trash floating past. Not only that, but littering is extremely dangerous for the environment and any unknowing animal that may stumble upon your poisonous garbage. Whenever you head away from a bin, make sure you take your own and bring your litter back with you. Simple.
