A Guide to Employing a Live-In Maid in Dubai
If you're new in Dubai and looking to employ home-help, or you've been an expat for quite some time and now need some extra help at home on a daily basis, our guide can help you. We appreciate when it comes to finding a live-in maid for the first time, all of the different pieces of information available online can be a little confusing.

But no matter, as with our guide and information you should be well on your way to smoothly hiring a live-in maid and/or home help in Dubai.

You see, maids in Dubai can often be a tricky subject to discuss, especially on our forum. Some like the idea, and some don't. But whatever your motivation, there is no doubt that having a live-in maid can make your life so much easier. Most of us move here and lose the traditional family support, so home-help is a key component to making your life run smoothly here.

Over recent years, a new unified maids contract was accepted and implemented by all of the countries in the GCC. This contract now regulates the rights of all maids and home help across the GCC with rules regarding leave, flights home and their rights to their passports. You can read more about that here.

Firstly, don't consider illegal maids whatsoever
In addition to that, it's important you are aware of the laws and regulations in place regarding illegal maids. Following a crackdown over the years, employers who break the rules can face fines and punishments between AED 50,000 to AED 100,000 or possible jail term and possible deportation. So our advice? Do not expose yourself to the risk. Illegal helpers include part-timers on someone else's visa sponsorship, full or part-timers with no visa at all, odd job men, gardeners not belonging to any company etc.

Your options are sponsor your own maid or home help, who must only work for you, or use a reputable, registered agency.
Below are the guidelines for the procedures to follow from a regulations point of view. For the pitfalls and plus sides, the best thing is to search through the threads on our forum. Yes, there are some horror stories, but there are also many, many gems out there too. It's always the way... The vast majority of people who are perfectly happy, don't bother to write about it!

So to help you on employing your maid or home help smoothly - and legally - here's some top tips to get you started...
  1. Be clear with the duties you require from your helper
  2. Be specific about what you will and won't provide
  3. Be clear about working hours and time off

  6. If you have pets, make sure your helper is happy looking after them - some people are very scared of dogs, for instance
  7. If you have small children, check their experience with them
  8. Ask for references from previous employers
  9. Train them yourself - every country has different ways of doing things, so take the time to train and educate your helper in the way you would like things done
  10. Think about sending them on a first aid training course if you are anticipating leaving them alone with your children
What provisions should there be?
Here's whaty ou should ideally provide for your helper. These provisions should be written into your contract with your helper, along with a list of duties and working hours:
  1. Own room fully furnished with bed, linen, curtains, wardrobe, drawers, towels
  2. Own bathroom if possible. If your villa has a proper maid's quarters, they can have a separate cooking area too
  3. TV with their local channels if possible (helps to make them feel less homesick)
  4. Food allowance (your maid may not eat the same food as your family)
  5. Day off a week minimum
  6. Basic toiletries, including soap, shampoo, toothpaste etc.
  7. Air ticket home and month's leave yearly
  8. Mobile phone. Most opt for pay as you go and give a fixed monthly allowance to buy credit
  9. Dental and health treatment... Most would be covered through their Health Card but there may be extra medicines required that do not require a doctor's trip
  10. Access to Internet to keep in touch with family. You may want to allow your helper to use the Internet sporadically at set times to send emails home

Where can I find a maid from?
There are various ways of finding a maid in Dubai... You can:

  • Use a registered agency that specifically does this service
  • Use word of mouth... Ask about, there's a very close network here
  • Browse community notice boards in local shops etc.
  • Browse and use the free ExpatWoman classifieds... It is so much better to find someone through recommendation from an expat family leaving

Note: Do not make the mistake of trying to employ a runaway/ absconding maid. There are many that do and you cannot legally employ them. In-country transfer of visa is allowed but both parties must be in agreement. Make sure you check everything before you make an offer.

Applying for a residence visa for your maid

  2. After stamping, take your maid for a medical fitness test (see pdf location map for 13 centres for medical fitness in Dubai. The Hepatitis B vaccination which costs an additional AED 50 is given in 3 doses - immediately, booster after 1 month and booster after 6 months. If you keep the yellow certificate as proof of all three doses, then when renewing your maid's visa, you do not need to re-do this, as the vaccination and certificate is valid for 10 years.
Costs of Medical Fitness
  • Normal fitness test costs AED 325 (AED 260 + AED 50 for Hepatitis B vaccination + AED 15 for courier and takes 5-7 working days to get the results.

e) Go to authorized typist to pay AED 5,200 (or AED 5,100 for non-urgent) to apply for residence visa.

  1. Submit residence visa application, along with medical fitness report to any DNRD branch. (If you get an SMS from DNRD saying 'Your medical fitness result is sent to DNRD', then you can proceed directly to any DNRD branch without collecting the medical report, as it will show up in the DNRD system).

You must declare to the officer what salary you propose to pay your maid, as this will be entered into the contract. You will receive 3 printouts of the unified contract which has to be signed by both sponsor and maid. If your maid is with you, request her to sign. Go to the bank counter inside the visit visa section and purchase an AED 10 sticker for attestation, and re-submit copies of the contract to the officer, who will counter-sign and return 2 copies to you. (One is for the sponsor, the other for the maid to keep.) A residence stamp valid for one year will then be placed in your maid's passport.

Additional Notes to Be Aware Of

Employment of domestic workers requires work contract
A new unified contract (called employment agreement for domestic workers and sponsors) to regulate the rights and duties of domestic workers was put in place from 1st April, 2007. The contract is valid for one year with options to renew and governs vacation, air tickets, medical care and procedures, in case of breach of contract.

Country specific requirements for minimum wages
Do keep in mind that each country has its own regulations regarding minimum salary, age etc and you will have to check with the respective consulate embassy for these details. A maid from India or Philippines must be older than 30, but not over 60. Even recommended minimum salaries differ, with Indian maids to be paid from AED 1,100 onwards (see update), as advised by the Indian Embassy, while new regulations from the Philippines say the minimum salary should be AED 1,400. See update . As per the Sri Lankan embassy, the minimum salary for Sri Lankan maids is AED 825. See update. The minimum salary for Indonesian maids is AED 800 and from Bangladesh, it is AED 750. See update Please note that these are minimum recommendations from governments, but there's nothing stopping you from paying more than the minimum wage.

DNRD Approval
Maids from the sponsor’s country are subject to approval by DNRD. In addition, an affidavit from your country's embassy/consulate certifying that the maid is not related to you may be required. If you need more than one maid for a large family, DNRD has the right to decide, but much will depend on sponsor’s salary and size of the family. Always carry copies and original documents, including labour contracts, salary certificates and passports. You may be asked to show your accommodation contract and are advised to carry this.

Illegal hiring of maids, without DNRD approval may result in fines of up to AED 70,000 as well as imprisonment for one month followed by deportation of employer.

Renewal of Maid's Visa in Dubai
This needs to be done annually. Go to an authorized typist & get online medical request form issued (free, though some typists charge AED 20) and application for renewal (ordinary AED 5080 + typing charges or urgent AED 5180+typing charges).

Take your maid for a medical fitness test. (See pdf location map for 13 centres for medical fitness in Dubai. The PDF includes phone numbers and timings). If you show proof of Hepatitis B vaccination done (yellow certificate showing all three injections done), then you do not have to pay again as the vaccination is valid for 10 years.
