Following an earlier thread, I managed to get my son in to see Dr at Cooper Clinic. The poor wee thing is suffering "unusually" with teething! Four teeth are coming through and have split the gum which is bleeding and exceptionally sore. To top it off, he has ulcers all over his tongue and gums as well....he hasn't eaten for 2 days (although just got half a small of custard down him following painkiller!!!!). Only interested in milk and even then he whimpers.....

Any other mothers been through this? I'm so upset about it. He is in so much pain and I just don't know how to help him..... He is trying so hard to be cheery and eat but everything he tries makes him yelp and cry...

JoyceB you were right!!! I took him for 2nd opinion today and immediately diagnosed herpetic stomatitis!!! He said he is past the worst so no medicine needed - just another uncomfortable 24 hrs for him (and ME!!!) Still not eaten anything but went to sleep tonight calm after milk. Admittedly I had to trick him into having his milk but after he'd had a sip he gave in and downed it all....then once on my shoulder he said "mummy, go sleeps"....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Hoping tmw will see the first mouthful of food!!!

Crouchey, I honestly think that a second opinion is VITAL here unless you have an extremely competent GP/Paed that you see all the time that knows you and your child's history. Without trying to be negative, it would seem that there are far too many Dr's here that just arn't on the ball or misdiagnose. I'm sure the wonderful EW will be more than happy to recommend their Dr's should you need to see someone else. It's just so difficult to watch your child in agony! SH

remmex76 I thought it was tonsilitis too....and yes his breath is offensive. That was what alerted me to the problem in the first place! Dr did look at his throat and seemed not be to think there was any problem... Thanks for all the suggestions. If I see no improvement by tomorrow then I'll think about a second opinion or a dentist!

sounds to me like he has tonsilitis! My DS had the same had that age with very much the same symptoms(especially the mouth ulcers). have you asked the Dr to check his throat? does his breath smell funny? he might just need a course of antibiotics. HTH

JoyceB and Ginnee both make valid points......there may be an underlying issue with the ulcers etc.....perhaps get another opinion if of course he is still not well today and you are seeing no improvement in him. Poor little guy, I feel for him and YOU! SH edited by sleepyhead on 02/01/2011 Yep was thinking along the lines of herpetic stomatitis which causes mouth ulcers in children and is treatable of course. A dentist would recognise it straight away.

Have you thought about taking him to a paediatric dentist? He/she may be able to diagnose a problem that a doctor wouldn't recognise. I've known people being treated for years who thought they had migraine then during a dental appointment being told that they had a prob with their teeth and night grinding. A mouth guard solved the problem and no more headaches! It's all very well to blame everything on teething and I remember nursing a toddler in hospital many years ago where the GP had brushed the mum's worries about high temp and red face. Turned out the poor wee soul had some kind of serious viral infection. Not trying to scare you but it might be worth checking. GPs don't have all the answers. Hope he feels better soon.

Poor man is awake now. Wants to eat so much....opens the fridge himself!!! He tried a mouthful of my yoghurt and screamed and put his hands in his mouth. He is just so fed up bless him. Can't get near his mouth. Giving paracetomol suppositries because he spits out anything oral...but can't get teething gel on the gums or ulcers......think I'm feeling just as sorry for myself! Problem is, this is just so out of character for him. He's such a bruiser. Never really cries, not really a moaner so this is just awful to see him so under the weather.... Hurry up and get better Mr!!!

Appletiser, I'm hoping he feels better too. He was up virtually all night screaming which was very distressing. I'm knackered and he is now sound asleep!!! I asked about hand, foot and mouth and the doctor said it wasn't. He just said stress sores accompanying the very painful teething! He also has a mild ear infection. Thanks for your help! He screamed once yoghurt was in his mouth! Maybe stinging the ulcers?? Poor thing. At least he is still drinking milk...

Sounds to me as he has hand,foot,and mouth disease...most of the time it is miss diagnostic ... Go back to the pediatrician and ask him about it...

Are you sure he doesn't have stomatitis along with the teething? The ulcers on the tongue and gums can be a symptom. Hopefully the doctor had a look at him. The docs I used to work with would prescribe a cocktail of liquid benadryl, maalox, and viscous lidocaine for the ulcer pain (not for teething pain, though). You may need a prescription for the lidocaine, and will have to squirt it in his mouth since he isn't old enough to gargle. Bless his heart :(

Claire, where do you get tubes of Fromage Fraise?? or just the tubs edited by SueB on 01/01/2011 You can buy them in spinneys - they're called Frubes. they come in a purple coloured box by the yoghurts. The other thing I used to do when mine were little was put lolly sticks into a little fromage frais pot and freeze them and then take them out of the plastic pot and you have a lovely healthy lolly! My little girl would suck on one of those for ever when she was teething.
