Anyone know how long you have to contest a credit card entry?

Just looked back through items for last month and there's a charge for nearly AED 1000 in a country we have been to, but weren't in at the supposed time of the transaction. I have no idea what this is for so i think it might be fraudulent. The transaction date is within the last 3-4 weeks but I think the bill has been paid. Is it too late to query it?

TIA

This happened to us months after we went to Zanzibar, and again was someone using it for an online transaction. My credit card details had been taken down probably from a restaurant as thats the only places we used that card. Contact the bank, get their fraudulent transactions form and fax it to them

This happened to me a few years ago - I had a call from my cc security dept asking if I'd been using my card for online gaming in Gibralter early that morning!! Thankfully they had blocked the transactions and the card was cancelled immediately they had spoken to me. Cancel it straight away.

Yep, you're right, they've got the details they need to do goodness-knows-what. And thanks!

If someone has all that info, then I would cancel the card. Hope you get it sorted out and your money back.

It was a website for purchasing online tickets for shows, movies etc so maybe were collected, although I don't know if they would need to show the card. I don't believe it was a mistake. It's a UAE card which I used in S America a couple of months ago, this online purchase was in the same country. Unlikely we share a similar card number and the same expiry date and verification code. I think someone over there stored my card details when I used it, and used my card more recently. When someone flips the card over to check the signature they can make a mental note of the verification code. I suppose all the other details they would need would be on the merchant's copy of the credit card slip. <em>edited by Sanddy_Dogg on 16/08/2011</em>

It's definitely not mine! It's something ordered online and I did not use that website (and certainly not for that amount). I guess someone somewhere got my card details whilst I was in that country and used them since. I've called the bank and they've advised me to fill in a dispute forma and email it back to them. If it was an online purchase the item(s) would have had to be shipped to someone? They probably got the shipping info right, but made an error in the credit card number.

That happened to us a few years ago on vacation and we were told that even though the charge came through months later, it was still probably money we spent, there was just a delay in the amount coming off our account as it was an overseas charge. We had to pay for them to investigate it, but as it was only 1 odd deduction that we couldn't explain we let it go.... Just kept a close eye on the bank account though!

You have a certain amount of days from the date of the statement. It should be noted on your statement. It should be there, but if not, call the bank. Even though you paid your bill, you can still contest it if within the amount of days allowed. If proven to be an incorrect charge, the bank will have to reverse the charge. I believe they will send you a form to complete if you are still within the timeframe to put in a claim. Ask them to fax it ASAP, complete it, and send back immediately.
