How it works with paying for Dubizzle items...

Can anyone advise on how things are normally done when you buy something on Dubizzle, for example large appliances and large furniture, and the seller agrees to hold onto the items for a week or so, until moving day when the removals team will pick them all up in the van. Does the buyer pay full cash and hope seller doesn't leave the country (call me a suspicious mind, but have heard of these tales on this forum!) or pay half as deposit, but what's to stop the seller re-selling the items to someone else? I'm a genuine buyer with cash and a definite moving date with removals team all geared up... But the seller won't know me from Adam! Help please...

Thanks ladies, it worked out well because the seller was happy to hold onto the items (I bought four items from her) and we paid a cash deposit and she wrote a receipt. She knows I have made arrangements to collect using removal van on the day. She had heaps of household stuff to sell and other buyers were also leaving deposits, so she had a system! Fingers crossed all goes smoothly and everyone's happy - so far so good!

I have heard many stories when the seller holds on, and then the buyer does not come back. In the meantime they rejected other potential buyers. Well, tbh, if the buyer wants it so badly, they have to act fast. A seller shouldn't hang on for a promise - first come, first served and all that. However, yes, if you hand over or accept a deposit, then do give/get a receipt and detail what you have put the deposit on (in detail)

HI Clare, I advertised a sofa on Dubizzle just last week. Thanks to EW, I had learnt that I should ask for a deposit. I have heard many stories when the seller holds on, and then the buyer does not come back. In the meantime they rejected other potential buyers. So, I asked for 200dhs for a 1000dhs sale. He was happy to do so. It has been almost a week now and he still has not collected the sofas, but I have at least been in contact with him and he should come Sunday. If the person is not keen, then would not leave a deposit. I think as a buyer, that it would be reasonable to leave a small deposit to show commitment. Keep in contact with the buyer so they don't think you have forgotten. The more comfortable they are, then the less they will worry. I didn't get anything in writing but I think this is a good idea for your protection. Good luck! Need an Indonesian bambo coffee table? Hee hee....

We are in the process of moving out and we have to accept deposits as we cannot afford for the buyer not to turn up on the agreed date, as we have to return the apartment keys and would face penalties if we didnt. There has been two occasions so far that we have been let down by 'so called buyers' so now insist on a deposit, especially with the moving out date drawing closer. Saying that if you are interested in a Fridge, Washing Machine, Cooker, Sofa, Bed, Bar Stools, TV, Water Cooler let me know, we are moving in 3 weeks.:) taz8674 at hotmail dot co uk

Pay cash only at the same time you are taking the furniture. If the seller is concerned you will not show up at the agreeed time with the cash or if you are worried the seller will sell to someone else, then you could leave a small deposit to ensure it is not sold to anyone else, however make sure you get a passport copy off the seller and their written acceptance of your deposit and holding the item. There are no set rules really, just make sure you and the seller are both confortable with it.

In this case I would leave a deposit with the seller only. Don't pay in full unless you are taking the item then and there.
