I've been trying to find [b'>baking soda[/b'> in the stores. Is there another name for it here? or is it in a different section of the store other than the baking aisle? Surely they have it here! Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate or birarbonate of soda. Baking powder is always called baking powder. The most popular brands of Baking soda are Cow Brand and Arm & Hammer. http://whitenteethtoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Arm-Hammer-Baking-Soda.jpg Baking powder: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Q-A/DavisBakingPowder.jpg The difference between the two: http://chemistry.about.com/cs/foodchemistry/f/blbaking.htm :)

scshroder, they call it bicarbonate of soda in UAE. I think that's the British term. I've seen it at Carrefour and Lulu, and Spinneys and Waitrose. baking powder and bicarb are not the same thing.... no one has mentionned baking powder ;) Baking soda and bicarbonate of soda are in fact the same thing.

Add one or two open pods to a small bottle of alcohol (rum or vodka) leave in a dark place for 6-8 weeks and voila, you have vanilla extract :) Buy my pods from the spice souk.

Caster Sugar is expensive but if you hunt around, the SIS brand do a normal granulated sugar and its finer then your normal granulated. Just buy granulated and whizz it in the food processor.

Carrefour at the Mall of the Emirates. For a year I was buying butter in the regular refrigerator cases before discovering that it was also available (and cheaper) in the frozen food section. It's found with all the other frozen baked items. This is lurpak butter, by the way. That's more like it!! Which Carrefour is this? :)

for Flour I use Al Baker all Purpose ( the blue one ) and thats about 9aed for 1 KG ( or is it 900g ?!) . I get that from Lu Lu. Icing Sugar - Cheapest is in Carrefore MOE . I get the SIS brand and you get a 500g Bag for 5.25. others sell it for 5.75. If a recipe calls for Demerera Sugar, I tend to use the SIS Brand of Brown Sugar and add a Teaspoon of Golden Syrup :) Thats 9 aed for 500g. If its a really special cake then I do buy dark Muscavado sugar by tate and lyle but its expensive. Caster Sugar is expensive but if you hunt around, the SIS brand do a normal granulated sugar and its finer then your normal granulated. i tend to use that and to be honest.. dont notice the difference. Its also a lot cheaper than caster sugar ! vanilla. as you cant buy the extract here and I dont like the essence I make Vanilla sugar blitzing the sugar and vanilla pods in a food processor and keeping them in a jar. You get a wonderful ash coloured sugar with the most heady smell and thats what I use. happy baking x edited by mushypeas on 09/10/2011

You're not the only one to have discovered this. I baked all the time before moving here and discovering that the store/bakery baked goods were cheaper than making it from scratch. I still bake every now and then because it's a pleasure. I buy most of my baking ingredients at Carrefour. Butter in the frozen food section is as low as 4.50 AED for 400g. That's probably the cheapest I've seen in Dubai. Such as butter, flour, etc? In the UK I used to bake lots of cakes, etc with my LO's, I still do it here but with the price of all the ingredients it's actually cheaper just to buy them ready made. The cheapest butter I can find is around 8dhs per 400g, this is crazy!! Is there a cheaper alternative???
