Mushroom fibre at More Cafe - a myth?!

Went to More for breakfast last week and my friend found something that looked like a thick black hair in her food. She turned green and gave it back, only to have the manager return saying that it wasn't a hair but a mushroom fibre. He brought it back on a little plate and proceeded to pull at it as apparently, real hair wouldn't break but a mushroom fibre would. He said he was convinced it was a mushroom fibre as they receive numerous complaints a day about it.

What do you ladies think?

Probably dropped from one of the "toasted bums" they have on the menu... Did make me chuckle.... [url=http://www.smilieshq.com'>[img'>http://www.smilieshq.com/smilies/sick0020.gif[/img'>[/url'>

Were there mushrooms in the dish she ordered and if so what type? Button mushrooms tend not to have that type of think black mycelia. She had ordered an English breakfast so there were mushrooms. Apparently they were wild. So glad to hear it probably was a fibre. I did tell the manager that seeing as they get loads of complaints about it, shouldn't they be extra vigilant before presenting it to the customer?

That means if it wasn't hair it was because they didn't clean the mushrooms properly, and that's after they had numerous complaints about it. Either way it sounds gross!

The mushroom that we know is actually the fruiting body of the hidden mushroom plant!. This plant is made up of microscopic filaments (hyphae) which combine to form strands called mycelium. The mycelium grows in the soil on wood and leaves, or in commercial mushroom farming, compost. The mushroom body first develops as a tiny ball on the mycelium and grows to a certain size before being picked to eat! Sometimes, strands of mycelium can remain with the mushroom during preparation and cooking. When cooked, the fibrous mycelium can look like a coarse hair. (Taken from a UK council site) :\:

Sounds gross, but it's true! They look like coarse hair, and as you said your friend found "a thick black hair" maybe that's what happened at More?
