We recently went for the anomoly scan at FMC with Dr Mirza who diagnosed a small hole in the heart (vsd). I understand that he has a relatively new high resolution machine and is diagnosing this condition in approximately 2 patients a day at the moment. I was just wondering if anyone else had this diagnosis and what the outcome was? Obviously hole in the heart sounds pretty scary to me but I have been asured that it is actually quite common. The other consideration is that it can be an indicator of Down Syndrome I understand. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks

Just wanted to add, i had the same thing at my scan. Nasal bone was present, blood tests came back with REALLY low risk, so i decided to forget about the VSD. Definitely didn't even think of having the amnio, as i didnt want to take the risk of causing problems with invasive testing to what was 99% likely to be a perfectly healthy pregnancy. Obviously if the minimal chance that the baby might have downs would cause you to make decisions regarding completing the pregnancy, then of course you should do it. Likewise if you really think you will spend the next 4 months worrying - this will not be good for you, or the baby. My advice would be, if all the rest of your results were low risk, to enjoy your pregnancy, and try not to waste any of this precious time with bump worrying about problems that probaby dont even exist :-)

Thank you all very much for replying, it is very comforting to know that others have been through (and survived emotionally!) the same thing. I am still so torn about having the amnio or not as my understanding is that it is about equal risk ie. having a miscarriage from the amnio or down syndrome and I can't get my head around what to do at the moment. What I would most like is to have had the amnio a week ago and for it all to be ok (or to be holding a healthy baby in my arms 4 months from now!). I know if I decide to wait and see it will be the longest 4 months ever but it helps enormously to know that all has worked out for all you with the same experience. Many thanks all for giving me some comfortxx

Hello, I had same experience. At 31 week scan also with Dr Mirza. Now my baby is 7 month old and she is fine. The small whole was confirmed by scan after birth as well. Lot of babies having VSD during pregnancy and it will close either during the pregnanxy itself or during the first 3 years. It should be fine, don't worry too much. If you believe your baby is ok than it will be ok. I did the test for down syndrom and it was negative it was a relief but also never 100% however. I only was sure after delivery. your baby will be ok as well! Big hug and all the best xx

Hi Emma! I had the exact same thing! I went to Dr. Mirza as well. I can tell you, he told me that my baby had a tiny hole in the heart and slightly dilated kidneys. Actually, I am writing at the moment a research paper on this subject for my University. It is true that the machines are very advanced and today a Doctor like him who is specialized, is finding a few a day. Most likely it will be gone later. Here is what I did. When I found out, I obviously broke out in tears because it is a soft marker for an abnormality. Please do not google anything, it will drive you even more crazy. Sit with your DH and discuss what you want to do. I spoke to my DH and he asked me:" Can you continue the pregnancy with this uncertainty? And there it was! I knew that I could not keep carrying this baby all the way and not knowing what was wrong with him. After terrible three days I decided to the an Amnio! It was the best decision I have made. It eased my mind and the results are over 99% accurate. It is really up to you. This happened at my 20 week scan. Of course when I returned to the 30 week scan the hole was closed and the kidneys were fine. But I do not regret my decision for the amnio. I am very emotional and it helped me to enjoy the remaining of my pregnancy. What ever you decide, best of luck. If termination is out of question for you, than you can wait till the 30 week scan instead of doing the amnio! Remember, you are carrying a fetus that is growing. So the heart will most likely be fine the bigger he or she gets.

Hey Emma, Whilst i cant tell you from personal experience, a close friend of mine had the same diagnosis for her little boy at her anomaly scan also with Dr Mirza, and as you say, she also found that lots of people seemed to be being told the same. Her baby was born 3 months ago and is a happy healthy little boy, with the hole having closed by birth. Try not to get too stressed out about it (although i know thats probably easier said than done) Hopefully everything will turn out fine for you and your bub as it did for my friend and hers! Hugs! xx ETA: A few weeks after my friend had her anomaly scan, she was unwell and when under investigation, found out that she'd had the same as a baby herself and the hole is now closed. She lives a very active lifestyle and was completely oblivious that she'd had it in the first place! edited by LMAO-DXB on 05/02/2012
