Finally I’m ready to outline my experience on Accutane. I did not want to hold a diary during the time as it currently (negatively) dominated every aspect of my life, therefore I didn’t wish to live on it any additional, and I simply wanted to get through it. I happened to be also extremely busy during the time with work etc. Background: I’m a 28 year old feminine who may have experienced from acne from around the chronilogical age of 14. I have extremely big/red/inflamed pimples, but not that much of it (ie. it doesn’t protect my entire face). Nevertheless, it makes pitted scars and terrible red marks that last several years (or permanently). I also have actually extremely oily skin and blackheads on nose that nothing will eliminate. I’ve tried pretty much everything over the many years including lots of all-natural stuff (aloe vera, jojoba emu, honey, vinegar, oil etc.), lasers (IPL, n-lite, another I do not remember), other light therapies (blue light at clinic and beauty skin lamp at home), topical (zinc lotion, BP etc.), skin peels (salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid), contraceptive pills (about 6 different ones over the years), antibiotics and spirolactone. This drug works well at dealing with acne. No Concern. It’s incredible at accomplishing these ends. Stage. Having said that, Accutane is all about tradeoffs. You’ll have negative effects. You well practically certainly have: extreme dry / fragile skin, wickedly dry / cracked lips. This I’m able to virtually promise. Various other negative effects that we personally believe are attributable to my using Accutane: several ingrown toe fingernails, watery itchy vision, mild nostrils bleeds, itchy head and hair shedding, muscle ache therefore decreased athletic capacity. You can find more about the possible side effects on http://accutaneforacne.com/acne-treatments/accutane/. Good luck! I was put on Roac for 6 months. The doctor monitored me closely. He would only give me the prescription for 1 month at a time. I had to go see him every month for blood test and he would check my skin to see how dry it was and ask how/if the medication was affecting me. I didn't experience any mood swings though. 2 year on and my skin is better than ever and it was worth going through it for 6 months. hang in there.

good call smiles, adult acne usually has some other underlying condition, but not always..... PCOS certainly can be a problem.. Mine is caused by PCOS, but the dermatologist still prescribed Curacne. I wondered if Dianette might not be a better long term solution. Unfortunately it played havoc with my moods last time I tried it.

I am about to start on a course of Curacne (as soon as my blood tests are back). I wondered though, how can these drugs help your underlying problem? Presumably your hormones will not be altered so the condition will return. I think that I will ask the doctor next time I go in. Also, I am curious to know how long your treatment will last. I have been put on for 4 months, which seems a long time. TIA Exactly better to find out the cause of the problem especially if it's something like PCOS which is what caused mine.

just as an aside .. I cannot find Curacne in the BNF...(British National Formulary) So do you know what it is? Roacutane is actually Isotretinoin...! Yes, Curacne is Isotretinoin. Didn't they develop that to [i'>help [/i'>with depression? edited by Chewit on 09/02/2012

I took it when I was 23 and it was horrific I went from being quite outgoing to feeling miserable. I was working on a cosmetics counter and was very ashamed of my skin so was desperate. I stopped taking it as I felt worse on it then off and hated my skin being so raw and flaky. I went to see a dietician and started drinking aloe vera juice stopped using products that stripped my skin went to yoga and hey presto I felt better and my skin improved! x I feel very lucky that I have 2 visible scars from those acne years x While it was getting better I used Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Concealer:-) x I hope you feel better soon x ETA: As i got older I found it to be PCOS related have you been tested? edited by Pricey on 09/02/2012

I was on Roaccutane. It didnt affect my moods but my doctor monitored me very closely anyways. Maybe your dosage is too high? Its always best to start with a lower dosage and work your way up (remember the doctor saying that).

Hi, Mood swings are not uncommon but should settle down after 4/5weeks, if not go back to your doctor and ask for an alternative.

Hi, I have no experience personally but my good friend took this when we were teenagers to help with her acne. My sister also needed to go onto it but was refused as there is a history of depression in the family so they didnt prescribe it. My friend was 100% fine on it so im sure it suits ppl etc and her skin is immaculate now! To be honest, it is a seriously hard core medicine. If you are feeling unstable and not 100% i would def contact your dermatologist to tell them. Dont wait. Even if it will pass, its good to be vigilant with this type of medication. Take care xxxx
