Will health insurance cover Colposcopy?

Hi, I recently had lletz treatment and a cone biopsy for severly abnormal cells and was told I need regular check-ups every 3-4mths. I went to the City Hospital and they said the smear was covered, but that the insurance company (ADNIC) would request a HPV test before they would consider covering the colposcopy. As I understand the test will prob show HPV in my case (due to the abnormal cells), and so the insurance will call it a sexually transmited disease and not want anything to do with it. So feeling under pressure, I had the HPV test and know that the results will hang me for any future check-ups or treatment.

I was under the impression that the colposcopy would be covered if it was a follow-up/check-up after treatment for abnormal cells???

The colpscopy will cost 4,000k without biopsies, and nearly 5,000k with biopsies, so quite a lot of money....

On a slight tangent..will health insurance pay for a cervical smear test? My health insurance company pays for an annual pap smear.

Hi, just found out today that my insurance company are going to pay for my colposcopy based on my previous findings last year, so didn't need to have the HP test done afterall. I think the City hospital had to answer a lot of questions and send reports before it was agreed. I'm quite pleased......now I have to worry about having the colposcopy! :-( edited by spudz on 02/04/2012

My insurance covered the follow-up pap smear, but said I needed to take a HPV test (at my own expense), before they would consider covering the colposcopy.

Mine didn't cover the initial pap smear, because they see that as a routine examination. But if there is some abnormality and you are free of hpv ( again you have to pay for that test), then they cover potential investigation and treatment and a followup pap smear edited by Lilli34 on 28/03/2012

It's so unfair! Makes you wonder what health insurance is for.

That is really bad of insurance companies. What if someone were diagnosed with cervical cancer? Would they not cover it because it is caused by HPV? How can they really trace all the origins of illnesses when it is being discovered that HPV is also causing mouth cancer in men? Ridiculous! I wish that some doctors would stand up against this. edited by AnonDubai on 27/03/2012 exactly and don't think this isn't on my mind as i have to have 6 monthly check ups and the dodgy cells could come back at any time and be worse. so i'd have to fund full on cancer treatment myself.

Thanks for the advice about the Goverment hospitals, think I'll stay away from them. I'm not sure what to do about the colposcopy, but it is really important for me to do these follow ups because I had to have cancerous cells removed late last yr. Luckily they were 'in situ' and weren't invasive 'yet'. All my previous smears were normal, so I need a colposcopy as a secondary check. I will have one done back in N. Ireland in the summer (for free), but feel I should be having one sooner than that as some Gynaes say you should have a checkup every 3-4mths, instead of the 6mths back in the UK and Ireland. I will ring Dubai London clinic now to see how much they charge for a colposcopy, because I've just noticed my insurance covers that clinic. Thanks!

My HPV came back negative as well, when I needed to have it checked in order to have a calposcopy to further investigate an abnormal smear. I had to pay for the initial pap smear as it was classified as a routine checkup, but the follow up smear after the colposcopy was covered .... I had to do the HPV test because of the same reasoning as mentioned by others. Absolutely silly...as HPV is pretty comon and even found in people that never had ***. But i have also encountered people claiming that having HPV or abnormal smears is a sign of basically being a sl** who sleeps around. Those people better never have to experience an abnormal smear themselves....Ignorance is wide spread. edited by Lilli34 on 27/03/2012

I am with Neuron - they covered my Colposcopy and biopsy but when result was HPV they rejected the next streatment which is Cryosurgery. I just received today a quotation from Dubai London Clinic with Doc Anna - AED 4500 all in all. go with dr anna. i have seen so many gynaes here in dubai and she is amazing. she is up to date, with an amazing bedside manner.i've had two surgeries with her and she has been nothing short of wonderful. the hospital is modern with great staff too. friend of mine was told by govt hospital she needed hysterectomy, i insisted she went to dr anna - she didn't need this AT ALL. completely wrong original advice. i'm off of my six month check up with her in april, fingers crossed. i f need anymore surgery i would always go to her.

Thanks for your repiles! Kelly, I think I'll check out Bupa. I was with them before when I was living at home, but stopped when I left. Is it worldwide Bupa? Purple,is there anything I need, other than my ID, to use the government hospitals? Do you know if they are any good? Would I need a doctor to refer me? Captain America, I thought that if you had abnormal cells you must have the HP virus.......would be great if it came back neg. Yes worldwide BUPA. I visited a government hospital when a friend has this issue. we both decided that we would rather pay (and sacrifice things in order to afford it) and go to a private hospital. government hospitals (at least the one i visited) did not have the most up to date equipment, staff, care. it's not something i would risk.

Yeh, I know Chocs! And apparently 80% of the population have this virus, and you don't have to have intercourse to contract it. It's very annoying.

They're so biased and backward! My insurance wouldn't cover it as my HPV test came back positive. They reallt don't get that you can pick up HPV through other sources - sooo stupid!

My HPV was negative, so don't assume it will be positive.

if you test positive for HPV, most likely you will not be covered (unless you have BUPA). sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
