I also got my wallpaper from DragonMart and I'm happy with em. Plus some of the designs are really cool!

LOL, thanks, but I have trouble doing what I have to do now! I would have to give up my EW time {:-p Lily, you are testing my memory now! OK, Wallpaper was, I think, about 40 dhms per square metre. Have a good look around several shops - don't buy from the first one - because from what I recall, the different shops do have a different variety. And don't forget to get your paste - it is a powder so what you don't use will store forever! Canvases - I can't remember how much I paid for canvases at Lulu's and Geant - sorry - as they were purchased about 8 months ago. The most recent I bought was from Wasco and was 40cm wide by 120cm high x about 5cm deep so very well structured. It was 120 or 130 Dhms. I haven't looked for canvas at Dragonmart so will be very interested to hear if you find some. I'm sure it would be cheaper there than other shops! In case anyone is interested in the MDF, I paid 120 Dhms for 3 identical laser cuts measuring 40 x 120 cms at Dragonmart.

Thankyou BMAP, will surely drop you a line when i gather all the materials. I think the plain canvas will be better to start with initially. The cutting would get a bit too complicated for me. Hopefully they stock plain canvases in those painting shops at dragon mart aswell, they always seem to have huge pictures, otherwise il try my luck at lulu or borders. If you don't mind can you give me estimates for prices of the canvases that you got at borders and lulu and the wall papers so i don't get ripped off at dragon mart since they always try their luck and am not very good at getting discounts. TIA

Thank you, that's very kind. If you can't find a really big canvas, then I would recommend getting 3 tall, thinner ones (odd numbers are always better than even to my mind) and putting them side by side to fill the space. If you need any more help once you've got your materials together, just drop me a line. The other thing they have out at Dragon Mart is a shop that does laser cut MDF board. They have some standard designs and sizes, but might also custom cut something really big for you using the same designs. You would just need to prime them then paint them. I am about to start working on something like this. It's difficult to explain, but it is an islamic star pattern and I will use the laser cuts initially as stencils on the same size canvas then alternate the canvas and laser cuts on the wall - so different depths and materials. It might be worth thinking about if you can't find a canvas the right size... Apologies to Asti, we seem to have hijacked her thread :-S.

love love the idea's , wish i was half as creative as you. Will try to hunt down the canvas in lulu's or borders, jumeirah is a bit too far for me, plus i would like to this on a budget. I want something big for a huge wall that just looks too barren.Wish could have seen the pieces you have made. They sound gorgeous.

There are several shops that sell big canvases: White Star Wasco in Beach Centre on Jumeirah Beach Road has many different sizes. I recently bought ones there that were 1m x 1m and also 120 x 40cm (I think). I've also bought 3 tall narrow ones of the same size for a triptych from Borders. Lulu's sells canvases quite cheaply too but I don't think I've seen really big ones there. The wallpaper shops at Dragon Mart will sell you wallpaper paste. It is a powder and you simply mix it up with water, cut your canvas to size, mitre the corners and stick it down by painting the canvas with glue and gently placing the wallpaper over the top then smoothing it down. It's actually surprisingly simple once you have the template. Some of the wallpaper is actually embossed so almost fabric like and 3D. I am thinking of experimenting with fabric paint on this as I have some paper left over - the background is like grey/silver suede with black flowers/vines embossed on it. It is subtle, but elegant. We have it in our dining room as a triptych. But they have all sorts...I was also tempted by some Zebra print which would be awesome in an apartment, but probably a bit over the top for my villa, LOL. ETA: I have the wallpaper triptych in the same room as a collection of those Venetian carnivale masks you mentioned in another thread, LOL, so you and I are obviously on the same wavelength. DH wouldn't let me go so far as to get the adult sized angel wings for the wall. (I was hoping for a bit of a Baz Luhrman style room...dining rooms are allowed to be dramatic in my book :-/) edited by Buy me a Pony on 01/06/2012

What a great idea BMAP, making huge a canvas using your favorite wallpaper. I would love to try that. Can you please tell where you got the canvases from and what sizes were they? also what did you use to stick them on. Would any glue work? sorry I dont know much about wallpapers so no idea what people use to stick them on.

They do have some lovely wallpaper down there and good because you can buy it by the square metre so you get only as much as you need. I have bought wallpaper from there and been very happy with it, but I use it to cover big canvases for wall art. I've never actually used it on a wall, LOL. I think I'd have more concern about it sticking to the walls in my villa because of the paint used which seems to come off even with the wipe of a wet cloth. I would worry that the glue would not stick to the paint (hence the use of big canvases to make a "feature".
