Well as a 1st time mother, I'm trying to get used to our wonderful bundle of joy and our new life. LO is still just 1 week old but we are facing 2 major BF issues:
1: she will only feed on one side
2: she goes thru phases of "forgetting" how to latch - which means that she is hungry, will search and search but cannot manage to suckle for any more than 5 seconds or so before detatching herself.
This 2nd issue is a big problem as it really affects her feeding and she gets very worked up!
Can anyone pls pls help with this?
Tnx so much

Oh and its not a big deal if one side makes less than the other, just offer both breasts at every feed, she might be happy with just one side or she may choose to take both. Your supply will regulate to match her needs.

The more she feeds from it the more milk it will make. Pumping after a feed will help too if you need to, but given how early on it is I wouldn't bother, you then have the issue of giving a bottle when breastfeeding is still a bit wobbly, not always a good idea. Try starting every feeding session on that side and the supply will quickly build on its own. edited by kiwispiers on 12/12/2012

Thanks Untouchable, Pardon my ignorance but where can I buy fenugreek and in what form? I am not familiar with it at all I'm afraid.... Am drinking lots of water already and the supply seems to be fine on the other side... Let's hope I can stimulate the other sode again! TIA You can buy it at the spices section in the supermarket, or if you'd like an easier option they sell fenugreek pills in herbal shops instead of brewing it. Hopefully the other side will produce more milk :). I actually had the same problem with my LO, one side had more milk then the other, I tried all of those options and just let her feed longer on the side with not much milk so it can start producing more again. Hope that helps :)

Ok WOW ladies the position seems to be key! Apparently she only likes to feed from one angle so by feeding her with the football hold from the other side, she seems to want to give it a try! BUT now I feel like the milk is diminishing on that side as its been a few days sonce she has fed from there. Is there anything I can do to restimulate the milk on that side? She has fed from there twice now since yesterday but needs to be topped up from the other side as there doesn't seem to be enough milk on that side. If I pump, will that stimulate production? Any tips would be fantastic! Tnx so much for all the advice! It really is invaluable to a first time like me! I usually pump to stimulate production, also with each feed change to the other side or let her feed for 20 mins on one side, burp her, change her nappy and then feed her on the other side. Also try brewing fenugreek and cinnamon with some honey or sugar, that helped my milk supply alot, drink plenty of water too.

Congrats! Breastfeeding was the hardest thing I had to do after giving birth! Just keep offering it and bite your lips in case it hurst! She will learn how to latch. If not, see a consultant specialized in this. Remember if you keep giving formula, your supply will get affected. Leave the formula and try offering the breast. A baby will take it eventually if she's hungry! Lots of luck. It is not easy! hugs!

Congratulations mmmmm:) To all the ladies, how long does your baby get used with the breast feeding with the correct latching.. I am trying my best to follow the lactation consultant instructions for the same and still I'm not doing it correctly... As a first time mom, I'm Afraid that by supplementing him with the formula milk, he will get used to it than my Own milk. He cries a lot as he is extremely hungry then we decided to top the breast milk with formula milk? But for how long ? Should I stop the formula milk now? Thanks

Thanks so much ladies for all the tips. Had another rough night again last night - lots of crying. I think she has wind problems too and although we try to burp her lots, she still seems to suffer terribly - although only at night.... I have tried to get an appointment with Cecile but she is going on holiday and cannot see me :( I have made an appointment with someone else for tomorrow morning (earliest I could get) so lets see if she can help. I really hope so. The thing that is strange is that she was feeding fine on both sides for the 1st week and then just a couple of days ago, this started. Its all a learning experience - for both of us!!! Thanks again and any other tips or tricks you have would be eternally gratefully received :) x

Congratulations! My son is 4.5 weeks old, and I had problems when I left hospital. I went to see Cecile the midwife in healthcare city and she was amazing, no problems since! Lots of people recommend her. Let me know if you need her number.

Firstly congratulations! its really common for babies to find one side easier than the other, my first baby was the same and took arpund a week or more to latch on the left side, he was the same as Daza's in that he preferred to feed lying one way and so the rugby/football hold helped. (as an aside I think that was due to torticollis which can be caused by the birth process so mention that to your paediatrician if you notice your baby tends to turn their head one way in general.) here is a list of breastfeeding support in the UAE http://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/monthly_pregnancy_babies_Breastfeeding_Support_In_Dubai_8935.aspx I suggest you get a qualified LC to help you with the latching issues and do persevere, it can take a few weeks for them to reall get the hang of feeding, you usually have ample milk the first 6 weeks though so even if she mostly feeds from one side she will get enough, and you can hand express or pump the other side to make sure its getting stimulated while she learns. If it is the case that your nipple is a bit flatter on one side, or that being engorged is maing it flatten (the area around the nipple gets puffy so the nipple is harder to access) then an LC can help show you techniques like reverse pressure softening which push some of hte milk back and help make it easier for her to latch on (do a you-tube search for reverse pressure softening to see how to do it)

Congratulations Mmmmmm! There is so much to learn with a new baby, both for you and your baby and problems with breastfeeding particularly are really common. I had problems settling in to feeding with my first and it was so stressful, you really have my sympathy. Like your LO, my daughter would initially only feed on one side. I thought it was a side preference but after some observation and help from a midwife it turned out that she only like to feed lying one way up! So I had to feed her on the left side in the normal position and on the right side in the 'rugby ball' position, tucked under my right arm rather that lying across my body. It took quite a few weeks before she would go on both sides normally. She also continually detached and it was a struggle to get her back on. I did lots of tickling her nose and chin to get her back on and just tried to stay calm, very hard I know but it really does help if you are relaxed. Like the other ladies have suggested, a lactation consultant may be able to give you some great pointers. Good luck, I'm sure you will get there in the end.

Hi Mmmmmm Congrats on the birth! This exact thing happened to me with my first born and I am so glad that I saw a lactation consultant. DD had a tongue tie and oral thrush (from me taking antibiotics after birth) and I had a flat nipple on one side so she had a preference for the other. It was not so much a preference though it did appear that way to me, she couldn't latch due to the nipple shape and her tongue tie, then once she got going she would pull off due to fatigue and also the thrush made it painful. Some days we were a mess needless to say and i had to pump and bottle feed for my supply but also to fend off jaundice at the same time. It was a rough month but the best thing I did was to see Dr Delphine Dupuis. Once I saw her we ditched the pump and bottle and we are still going strong at 9 months. Don't give up!!!!

Congratulations on the first baby :) things are never easy in the beginning but will definitely get better. Just be patient with her Mmmmmm. Keep trying and offering, she's still very young to prefer one side. Breastfeeding is not that easy in the beginning but keep trying and be persistent. As long as you know the right position and what latching on should look like you should get some good results soon. If you've given birth in AH, their BF specialist is very good and should give you a home visit. Just call and arrange for this. If not, give them a call and try to get her to visit you. All the best x

Not sure if this will help but there used to be a specialist at Kids First on Al Wasl Road who helped many new mothers sort out these kinds of problems.
