Ladies, I love my slow cooker and want to do my gammon/ham in it - how do I calculate the cooking time? I've googled it but can't find instructions based for a 6lb (2.7kg) joint .... what's the rule of thumb?

Hi there, I'm toying with the idea of doing my ham in the slow cooker. Can someone who has done this already tell me how much water or coke was used? I'm a bit nervous doing it this way rather than the conventional boiling and then baking it at the end with the glaze. I'm confused as the bit on nijellas website says to cover the gammon in coke but it says below only an inch of liquid is required. Any tips to get me started. Just switched the slow cooker off, ham smells wonderful, may glaze in the morning with some maple syrup ... looks lovely and smells divine - thank you all for your help :-)

I was just reading the cola recipe from Nigella a few days ago and although people had raved about it, it just seemed wrong, but think I may just give it a go! Hope it turns out delicious Cymraes, I shall keep my doors and windows open just in case it wafts Aldea way!!!! X

Nigella also recommends cooking it in cola using the slowcooker. I've used this recipe on the hob and it is delicious. You then finish it in the oven with her treacle glaze. I second this best ham I've ever cooked and will be doing it again this year. Just don't use diet coke!! Never thought of using my slow cooker but might try that.

Yes, about 5 hours... instead of water, use beer. Keep an eye on it and top up if necessary... also, add some cloves and brown sugar.

I used to cut an onion in half and use these as a base to joint on, then add some water to cover an inch in height, then cook for about 5 hours.... i just used to an eye tat the pot never got dry and could just kind of tell when it was done. The smell of it was yummy.... Sorry thats not much help is it.... X
