not really shocking - the common denominators for the top part of the list are probably lack of seat belt legislation and higher volume of cyclists and pedestrians with poor road sense... imo
Agree. A higher proportion here of idiots that let their kids ride without a suitable car seat/seat belt, let them lap ride or even join them up front. Am DISGUSTED at those that let their children do this. I think also a lot of people come here and think that they don't have to strap their kids in anymore as others don't and it's more fun for them to be free in the car etc - wake the h3ll up and don't be so irresponsible. You are not only putting your kids in danger, but your passengers and those in OTHER CARS. Grrr, I get so cross about this. It drives me mad. One of the reasons I want to leave Dubai. :(

Come on, it is not that shocking if you read the actual numbers. UAE has 1056 death a year. Almost the same as the much smaller Belgium (1067), however Belgium is ranked at 144th place for this, simply because their population is larger. Japan had 6639 fatalities, yet they are only 169th out of 178 countries. UK is 3298 death and placed 167th. Australia, Germany, France, etc are all have much higher number of fatal accidents than the UAE. I actually wonder that when they divide the fatalities with "population", do they only consider emarati citizens, or uae residents including expats? Not sure!
Read ANY of the newspapers and these statistics are very clear.
eg from a few days ago: http://www.khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticleNew.asp?col=§ion=theuae&xfile=data/theuae/2011/March/theuae_March38.xml
dentro ... seriously. There are lots of factors which contribute to road accident fatalities, not the least of which is the size of the population, and the number of people using the roads. Better statisticians than we have used myriad data to compile these figures, so the idea that countries are in the 'wrong spot' is pretty silly. Sorry. :)
The UAE statistics are even more worse than published. According to a friend of ours who worked on a PR campaign for the RTA, the road death statistics only includes those who died on the highways, not those who were badly injured and later died in a hospital.

? The numbers are per 100,000 . Total opulation size is irrelevant. The UAE rate is nearly 4 times the rate of Belgium and nearly 8 times the rate of the UK!

I'm not shocked really! The RTA has a poor attitude towards it all - I called them the other day because a lorry had lost its tyre in the fast lane of Emirates Road, and every G55 and Hummer going 140km was swevring at the last minute to avoid it. So I called the 800 number and told them and they asked me for any suggestions ... so I suggested they display their number on their big over-the-motorway electronic displays to encourage people to report these things - to which I was basically told its not the RTA's problem. It's a police problem. Which made me really glad the RTA is responsible for Dubai's roads as they couldn't give a monkeys
Over 90% of the world's fatalities on the roads occur in low-income and middle-income countries, which have only 48% of the world's registered vehicles.
Almost half of those who die in road traffic crashes are pedestrians, cyclists or users of motorized two-wheelers, collectively known as "vulnerable road users".
WHO predicts that road traffic injuries will rise to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030
Dubai is 9th on the list
