Anyone have an old fashioned video camera I could borrow?

I was wondering if anyone had an old fashioned video camera which uses mini DV tapes that I could borrow? I have an attachment device which can translate the tape to digital footage, but the attachment needs to plug into a camera and works whilst the tape plays. My own camera is well and truly dead!

I don't need the camera to actually record, just to play the tapes. I'd be happy to travel anywhere to pick it up and would be really appreciate the loan.

Hi Ladies, Sorry to open up an old thread but Im looking for those old video camcorders that play the video 8 cassettes. My hubby got some old videos that needs to playback and we've been looking everywhere to get one. Does any one have one to borrow? Thanks a bunch. :)

I've plugged in via firewire/USB and I can't specify what to import as it doesn't appear as an option Zannie's DH here ;) I work in TV and I do a lot of video editing on my MacBook Pro using a mini-DV camcorder as a source, but I use Final Cut Studio rather than iMovie. Firstly, make sure you've definitely got the camcorder plugged into the computer via a Firewire cable, not USB; you will need a 4-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable. Which version of iMovie are you using? It should automatically recognise the camera when you turn it on, but if it doesn't, there are various possible reasons for this. The camcorder usually won't show up in the Finder, you will only be able to access it through your video capture/editing application.

Hi Quickchange, Unfortunately the Mac doesn't seem to "see" the camera. I've plugged in via firewire/USB and I can't specify what to import as it doesn't appear as an option. It's not there in IMovie nor in Finder - any suggestions? It'd be MUCH quicker to do it direct and hopefully would be in a more manageable format.

holly can't you import on the mac with imovie. Just plug in camera and see if imovie recognises it. I can do this with my camera. then its easy.

Ladies, I'm having some success! KellsBells has kindly lent me her camera and I've been merrily copying our tapes to a digital format. My only problems is that the program I'm using only works with a PC and I'm Mac based now ..... So I'm transferring the movies to an external hard drive, then importing them to my Mac via IMovie. The only problem is, that the whole movie transfers across as one clip, up to 90 mins long! Not so great for editing and it's taking forever .... I'm going to try to get to an Apple store tomorrow to see if they can recommend a Mac friendly program to avoid this, but meanwhile, I am definately capturing and saving tapes to digital! I'll be happy to do tapes for others when I'm done with our collection, but Kellsbells is first!

Hi Holly & Kellsbells, We have the exact same problem! We have a Panasonic Mini DV recorder which has given up the ghost - even the repair centre said that I should buy a new one, which my hubby happily did, but the new one is a digital HD so I am left with about 20 or so mini DV cassettes that I can't transfer onto my Mac. Holly can you keep me posted on whether you were able to do it? If so, can I be really cheeky and ask if I can also borrow your old JVC kellsbells?!? Thank you!

We're the same - lots of tapes sitting around but we just plug cam into the telly if we want to watch them... edited by Sue62 on 08/01/2011

I have an old JVC that uses miniDV. You're welcome to use it. And when you're done, I'll need to pick your brains as we have SO many mini DV's and I would love to transfer them just havent a clue where to start!

You've probably got this sorted now, but DH wanted to point out that Holly's tapes are all mini-DV, which means they will NOT work in a Digital8 camcorder (and vice-versa).

Ladies, thank you so much for all your offers! SJC, unfortunately DH said he threw out the charger when he threw out the no longer working video recorder! WOW< that's a first - he usually keeps everything! I'd be happy though to do your transfers when I get it organised - will keep you posted. Sue62, I have literally dozens of tapes and basically no idea what I'm doing really. I have a Mac and was hoping to import them via IMovie. Unfortunately as I don't have a working camera any more I can't see if there is the facility to just plug it into my computer ( which does have a firewire connection). Thanks so much for letting me know I might be doing more steps than necessary. As soon as I get hold of a camera, I'll give you a yell - or do you have one I could borrow? Quickchange - If Sue 62 has a camera, I'll try hers first as she sounds like she knows all about what I"m trying to do! Thanks for the offer, SJC doesn't have a charger, so I may still need to get back to you! Lulla thanks you, will try the ladies above first.

You don't need an "attachment" to transfer the video, generally a firewire lead is used for this and you would need a firewire port on the PC. There are all sorts of software that will take the data (video) from the camera including Microsoft's Movie Maker that comes free with newer versions of windows. I'm only saying this as I don't want you to try transferring the video using some clever analog device from the composite output of the camera (the yellow phono plug). This will totally defeat the object of recording your precious footage onto digital media. How many tapes do you need to tranfer? I may be able to help!

I have an older model, Sony, without the digital screen. The tapes say Hi8 on them. They are roughly the size of a packet of cigarettes, only thinner. Let me know if this sounds hopeful.

Yip, the tapes fit into the palm of your hand. Tell you what, you can borrow the camera with pleasure if I can get you to transfer my tapes, or you lend me your tape transfer thingamejiggy when you are done. I'll call you in a sec.

Oh, oh, our old one was a Sony but I've pulled out my tapes and I can't see digital8 written on them anywhere. Do the tapes it takes look like an audio tape but about the size of your palm? Mine seem to all say DVC or DVM. If you think they sound like they might be the right ones, perhaps I could meet you and I'll bring a tape with me so I don't take your camera if its not the right one? Thanks a million! edited by holly on 06/01/2011
