Hi all,

We’re fairly new to Dubai and are looking for someone to come in twice a week to do cleaning and possibly some ironing. I’m hoping you may be able to help with some questions:

1. We have pets so would definitely need someone who is pet friendly - is it reasonable to ask a maid to clean litter trays? I don’t want to offend by including it on our to do list however given we both work full time it would be a big help!
2. I’m due to meet someone at the weekend who has been recommended – I’m not sure what her sponsorship status as I know she does nanny / cleaning work for a number of people. What should I be checking and do I need to take out insurance for her (assuming we go ahead with this option)
3. If you use an agency, what’s the best option for getting a key to the maid? We’re out at work all day and would prefer someone to come in during the week – if we can get the same person each week then once we feel comfortable with that person I think I’d be happy for them to keep a key. But in the interim it would be good to hear what others have done (I’ve considered getting an out key security box)
4. We live in a 5 bedroom villa, would it be reasonable to think two four hour sessions would be enough?
5. Does anyone have any experience of using maidsindubai.com or Maticservices.com? Or can you recommend any other agencies

Any other hints and tips would be greatly appreciated!

As you've already been advised elsewhere, please do not use a maid who is privately sponsored by someone else - it's illegal, carries fines of 50,000 dhs for everyone and deportation for the maid. Your only legal routes are to sponsored someone yourself, or use an agency. Agencies can provide ladies who are ok with pets and you give the agency a key and they hand it out to the cleaning lady on the days they're required to come.

Hi Louisella.... to answer your questions... 1) that's not unreasonable to add, don't worry, you can specify/request when hiring a maid that they must be pet-friendly 2) if you want to hire a live-out maid, be sure to hire through an agency... there's a lot of legalities surrounding the hiring of home help in the UAE so best to follow the correct channels to ensure you don't get into hot water or fined 3) just hide a key somewhere and inform the maid where it is to let herself in 4) it takes 4 hours once a week for our 2 bed to be cleaned, so 2 sessions for a 5 bed should be fine 5) no experience with them, but i'd recommend maids.cc or justmop -- the latter can be paid online ahead of booking

Hello Louisella, 1. Looking after pet, including clearing the litter is normally accepted as task for a maid. 2. In UAE, you can hire someone from a company or on your own sponsorship. Anything else is illegal. If she is from an agency / cleaning company, she could very well be recommended in a circle of residents. If she is on her own visa, dont take, fine is AED 50k. 3. Go with what you feel comfortable with. 4. It depends on your lifestyle preferences & budget. See how it goes at start & fine tune it as you go along. 5. I havn't used either of the 2 mentioned agencies so can't comment. you may fine these past articles helpful https://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/forum/maids-home-help/part-time-housemaid-woes-where-am-i-going-wrong https://www.expatwoman.com/dubai/forum/dubai-northern-emirates/excellent-housekeeping-service-not-shill-regular-poster-here Good luck. .
