I'm not sure if this is another perseverance thing but DD will happily gulp at her bottle, but when I put her milk in a straw cup, she takes a few sips and then wants to carry on with the rest of her day! I even show her that I'm putting her milk from the bottle into the straw cup but it has made no difference. Sigh! Do I just keep trying? She loves her water and fruit smoothies in the straw cup so I don't think that's the problem. And when I put the milk back into the bottle, she downs it again. Does this get better? I don't want her going off her milk :(

Why do you all want to get rid of the bottle so eagerly? It is recommended to breastfeed a baby for two years. If you are not doing that, then at least let them have the sucking satisfaction at the bottle teat. Such small babies need that, don't they? That is my understanding. Would love to know what other mothers feel about it. As long as proper hygiene is maintained and the kid is not lingering on or falling asleep with the milk bottle in their mouth, what harm does it do? I tend to agree with you, Sunsa. I don't know why there is so much fuss about giving up a bottle at 12 months. The same goes for breastfeeding. I am still breastfeeding my 2 year-old and many people find that shocking and I actually don't care.

Just to let you know: My DD had a bottle every night before bedtime until 23 months. We went on vacation to France and I actually brought Al Marai milk boxes from here so she'd feel comfortable in her new environment. The first night at the hotel at bedtime, I tried to give her the bottle and she refused it. I never gave it to her again and that was it. So sometimes these things can just happen overnight.

Thanks Sunsa. Did quite a lot of reading yesterday again and a few of the testimonials said their children gave up their bottles on their own because they wanted to feel "grown up". That might be the route your LO takes. You may also find that just one bottle a day isn't enough to do any harm but ask for opinions from your LO's Paed and Dentist. I'm a first time Mum so am still trying to figure things out as I go. Above all, go with your instincts. Mum knows best! ;)

Claire, sorry if it sounded judgmental, did not mean it in that way at all. Was just trying to understand the concepts. My 3 year old loves her milk and prefers to take it in a bottle. She still gets the bedtime bottle of milk and I tried at one stage to stop it but it didn't work. So we are still continuing on that one bottle a day. Do u think it should stop?

Jag - I sympathise but am glad to know I am not alone here. I'll let you know if I find a winning solution. Ashc - I'm slowing substituting formula with whole milk. I started by making her scrambled eggs etc with milk instead of formula and now I'm taking out a little formula (up to half now) and filling her bottle with whole milk until she's on that entirely. Good luck! Sunsa - wow...I feel judged on all levels here! Not only for not being able to breastfeed anymore (althought I'd love to!) but also on wanting to wean off the bottle. All the books and websites I have read and my Paed and Baby Clinic suggest doing it at 12 months before it becomes an unbreakable habit and to avoid tooth decay and improper dental development like "bottle mouth" etc. I figure if they all say the same thing, then they must know what they're talking about. Each to their own.

Am going to watch this closely. DD is doing the same at 15 months. But she LOVES her milk ( still on formula...hates whole milk) so don't want to deprive her. Any tips on switching to whole milk. She HATES it with a passion. TIA

Am having the same problem with DS - 15 months.. DD swopped over with no problems at 12 months, but DS being a little stubborn. he does the same thing, and refuses to drink it out of his cup. he was winging for his milk bottle yesterday morning, and I gave him his cup, but pushed it away. I ended up giving him water in his bottle, and he drank it all! Refused his milk cup last night and again this am. Ended up giving him water (a lot less) in his bottle again this am as he was winging again.... Am hoping to break the habit, but he now hasn't had any milk for 2 days :( So will be intrested to hear suggestions. He does have milk in his cereal and yoghurts etc, so its not like he is being deprived of it, but would like him to drink some more...
