My dh is going to the states in 3 wks, he has just realised his passport expires july 2011, it says USA only requires passport to be valid for duration of stay, however UAE requires 6 months. Is it different if he is a resident here with a residency visa or should we be worried? Please any help gratefully received!

My husband was not allowed to board an aircraft because he had five month and three and a half week remaining on his passport. I doubt he will be allowed to travel.

My DH left the UAE with 6 months and week on his passport and he warned to come back in he would have to have more than 6 months left on his passport, and he had a resident visa. Also he sent his UK passport away for renewal at the end of Feb and it is still not back so they are not always quick at renewing it!

G'Luck. Well that is not what the British Embassy state on their website, are they wrong? Well they could be giving the official advice but as we all experience on a daily basis, the 'rules' can be altered here easily; the last time my DH renewed his passport it only had days to expire and he had to go though a panic at the Embassy here. The annoying thing was he had just returned from a trip home and hadn't noticed until the night before he was leaving. No issues either getting on the flight (residency permit still had a long time), coming back to into Dubai - and this was around three or four days left in his passport. <em>edited by Pomegranate on 05/04/2011</em>

Thanks for info ladies, looks like he will need to get a new passport quick smart, how long does this process take if you are doing it from here, doesn't it have to go through Germany now? Yes, 7 to 10 days return, and don't forget that you may need to fullfill visa requirements with the new passport number to the USA side prior to travel.

DH received an e-mail at work informing them that air traffic regulations has changed on the first of Feb. From February the airlines will not accept anyone on board with a passport which expires within the next 6 months. It is not a UAE rule. Maybe your husband should check that out first. I don't know if it is really enforced.

That's fine, as he already HAS a UAE visa - different situation to how the OP seems to have written. The question is, has the OP's husband already got a residence visa - or not? That's the difference. If he is here on a tourist visa, he cannot return (officially) with a passport less than six months validity - unless you are lucky on the day and the Imm Officer doesn't check properly. Not guessing, but not reading the OP's post properly. She asked, "is it different if he has a residency visa?" leading me to assume he has one.

Print off the forms now, fill them in DHL it in the morning, Will be back in 10days. Make sure photos are the right size and all the pages on the forms are filled in correctly. Friends had theirs back in 7 days, we got ours back in 10 days.

To be safe (and assuming it's a US passport) While he's there he should do an expedited renewal. He can do it early based on the need to have 6 months validity. Then he can re-enter with BOTH passports together - the cancelled one which still contains the valid UAE residence, and of the course the new one. Once back he can have the residence transferred into the new passport. Hope this helps. Why go through the hassle of transferring the residency to the new passport, just bind the two together - that's what I do.

If he has a residency visa already in his passport for UAE then he will be allowed to return. If he hasn't (in theory) he won't be allowed back in.
