I think knee length is fine. But I have seen a lot of short shorts, esp with Dads at school pickups so I know not all expats stick to the knee length rule. anyway, you are right, this guy got done for more than his shorts. and hey, he was not imprisoned, he is lucky really.

Shelly wrote the comment on the basis of the first post, she did not have the photo or the story that went with it, i didn't see a need for an attack once context is established. I doubt her dh walks with a waddle and denim bum huggers out! LOL Yes, thank you SW! My Dh wear shorts that are smart casual and are not above the knee. Definitely not the type of shorts that were later shown to be the subject matter of this thread. ;) And for the record everyone, the guy in the photo who got done, yes it is totally offensive to the way things are here. But I see nothing wrong with nice, smart casual knee length shorts on men. If you do, then so be it. Lets all be thankful we are all different with different views! Now, if you really want to have a debate about the way people dress when it comes to the law of the land, here's one for ya! Signing out now because I have better things to do than defend myself on a forum where everything I write is based on MY OWN personal opinion. Enjoy this link! :D http://au.news.yahoo.com/world/a/-/world/9166141/french-burqa-ban-goes-into-force-on-monday/

Its nothing to do with the shorts, he has a ladies handbag and he was commenting on other men lol i think that was the main issue. His not exactly cross dressing, he drew attention to himself in what he was doing thats why he got arrested. The cells would be overflowing if they locked up every man that wasnt wearing the right length shorts.

Seriously? DH wore shorts out today... its bl00dy summer FFS! Hope its not true. I am sure the local women care about that, when they are forced to keep looking in the other direction. FFS! No need for profanity and what local women? Really this is ridiculous over the years i have seen many male GCC nationals wearing shorts and expats as long as they are clean, smart and knee length i have never known a problem. The guy in the photo was wearing bum huggers and was probably ozzing gay which was far more the issue i would suspect. in our local Aswaaq store they do not like men in shorts.....and they have said it too. Bllllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, like they would say anything if someone of local importance walked in, in shorts!!!!!!!!!!!! Bla bla we are not talking about your local cold store!!!!!!!

Lol those are booty shorts!! :\: Perhaps someone reported him. They seem lenient here compared to other ME countries and seem to practise a 'don't ask don't tell' policy, but if a man is flaunting his s*xuality then unfortunately he is risking getting in big trouble. Same as women tarting it up - it's all well and good saying it's only clothes, everyone does it etc. but on your head be it if someone makes a complaint. FWIW I'm pretty sure Shelly means normal shorts, not flipping hot pants! There is no issue with men here wearing knee length shorts or boardies in public.

To be honest some of the things or lack there of that guys where are just appalling. Bum skimming shorts or not, some just walk around like they've literally just walked off the beach. Wearing a sarong would be a better idea.

But I think that was kinda the point SW, shelly's comment just seemed a little insensitive. Yes, men should wear knee length shorts, unless they're going to the beach or other place where shorter shorts are more appropriate. But people do sometimes forget that the modest dress codes also applies to men. The filipino guy was probably done for cross dressing as others have said.

Seriously? DH wore shorts out today... its bl00dy summer FFS! Hope its not true. Oh well just because it's summer and it's ok for your hubby then! You do know that there are certain places where men wearing shorts is NOT acceptable - try doing that in a mall in Sharjah and see where you end up. I hate seeing guys strolling down the street shirtless at the moment, it just looks sooo tacky. unless it's Tom Cruise.....

I guess the fact that he is a celeb (in his world) had an impact on this reaction. He is probably vocal about his lifestyle on public forums and so is a target when he is here. The handbag and the sandals probaby didn't help.... Think so.. not very micro are they though? denim cut offs! Probably how he was acting!

Yes - this guy seems to be quite controversial back in the Philippines, what with public feuds on Twitter and angering certain public figures....

I guess what i was trying to say before is that if my DH had gone out dressed like that (LOL....) no fuss (well...) but this guy is a public figure, who knows what he had said publically before he got here and then surely he was creating a stir. So the powers that be acted in line with the cultural/social values of the UAE.

no one said there was a law but it is a strong suggestion on how to present ones self in public here. Little shorts are not it :).. or boobs hanging out or bum cheeks peeking from short or clothes that are so tight, going naked would be a relief to the eyes lol..or wazoos on display...really just not on. Actually all of the Emirates have decent dress LAWs however they are not always enforced, but be sure, they are there and if needed will be used.

The problem is, what are really effeminate guys supposed to do if they live here? I've met a few here in Dubai in my time and wondered how they cope here and whether they get hassled much. I suppose all they can do is dress down as much as possible, but really this place is so full of contradictions, that it's hard to know what to do at times. For example, it's hard for me, as a westerner to see 2 men walking down the street hand in hand as normal (whatever that is) outside of a gay relationship, but lots of men do it here and it is accepted. Then some girls walk around with hardly any clothes on and no-one says anything to them at all, while others get arrested. There just doesn't seem to be any consistency... edited by chizz on 08/04/2011

Bl00dy h3ll one look at the guy and he's asking for trouble here. Of course it's not my opinion but this is Dubai. edited by Lady Bubbles on 08/04/2011

I was just reading that article on FB. I too thought that they weren't micro shorts, as in hot pants, but just normal denim shorts. Someone wrote on a related newspaper article that he was flirting with guys in the street and was carrying a ladies handbag, so I think they got him for cross-dressing, which is illegal here. I thought there was more to the article than met the eye!...who knows the truth though?

Along the same lines, a (female) lawyer from the UK was recently asked to leave a meeting at the Dubai Courts as she was wearing a suit with a knee length skirt! How things are changing in Dubai.....
