Hi everyone,

How much milk are toddlers supposed to drink? My son is 27 months old and has been taken off dairy by his doctor to see if his constipation will get better and now I'm worried about calcium and his bones and growth and what not.

Thanks

The min is 12 oz (360 mls) & the max is 20 oz (600 mls) at 1 yr +. it includes dairy in food & cereals. Did you try toddlers milk? It has all the calcium & menerals they need & 2 feeds of 6 oz each is allwhat they need to get all the nutrients they need from dairy xx

Thank you so much BFC. My son is showing improvement already so hopefully with time I can reintroduce them to his diet. I just have to make sure for now he takes enough calcium from other sources and vitamin D like you advised. Thanks

Yes, he will be OK without milk :). Once a child weans, milk is really just a convenient source of calcium etc, and in fact many cultures around the world do not consume dairy at all. Paying attention to calcium from other sources such as the ones meals mentioned may be wise (a websearch should give you more information), particularly if he stays off dairy long-term; you may also want to look into supplements. Making sure he has enough vitamin D will help ensure that he absorbs calcium well - in this part of the world, many mums and babies actually have low vitamin D levels and this can cause calcium deficiency even if sufficient calcium is being consumed.

I guess my question should read, "will my son be OK without milk?" :) His diet consists of a variety of things so he could be getting calcium here and there, but I'm worried if that may not be enough.

Thank you meals, I should have added, all dairy except pro biotic yogurt as it doesn't have a constipating effect, in fact the opposite. His doctor said if I'm worried about calcium intake then I can give him that. But my son refuses to take it. Cheese on the other hand is a big no no. He loves salmon so I'll up that. Thanks again. But my question is still unanswered. How much milk are they supposed to drink at this age? I am reluctant to go by the book on this one as some even suggest 350 - 500ml and I don't think that is right at all. Thanks

There are other foods that are rich sources of calcium that are non-dairy products that you can provide for him, including salmon, tofu, rhubarb, and sardines. HTH

If your son has been taken off dairy by the pediatrician then he shouldn't be having yoghurt or cheese etc either. These all contain dairy. If you are concerned, perhaps put him on a kids multivitamin with calcium in it for the meantime and then once his constipation or ?dairy intolerance has been assessed then review with the pediatrician for calcium replacements.
