Putting this here incase any seasoned parents can help me.

My 18 month old son has taken to removing his nappy when he has done a poo. Obviously as soon as I know he's done it - I change his nappy but twice when he was supposed to be having a sleep. He's had a fun fair painting with the contents of his nappy in his room.

This is absolutely disgusting. I dream of having a maid (especially someone who's abused my kindness) so that I could get them to clean the mess, but I'm the maid in my house, so I obviously have to clean it myself.

Last week was the first time! As disgusting as it was, I cleaned up - laughed it off and thought memories. Today it has happened again and I'm not well (literally been hit with flu in the last 12 hours!) husband is away for almost 10 days again! AND I feel like I'm about to snap!

Any tips for preventing this? I'm going to start taping his nappy! But seriously anything that could help me?

Thanks for all your replies and advice. This week has been such a tough one and I know as mothers and women we will just get on with it but seriously I thought I could run far far away after this happened! Thanks for the good laughs too - loved the poo in mil hand story Joyce :)

Everybody is talking about potty training but no one is mentioning discipline. At the age of 18 months onwards potty training is a must but when they start playing with their poo you must show them that it's wrong by firmly explaing that to them again and again and if all fails a smack on the wrist while explaining will do the trick. Now this is not physical abuse as it's harmless and only symbolic, it's a way to let your child know that he/she crossed the line. This course of action goes with every other serious matter and beleive me gaining control starts right now at this age or else you'll be their slave for life. Good luck :)

I used terry nappies which were not as easy to get off but that was 30 years ago!! I can still see my darling cherub of a DD quietly placing a stonker of a poo into my MIL's hand as she was prattling away to us and not really watching what her darling 14 month old grandaughter was up to. I grabbed a tissue and removed the offending poo and rushed into the loo with it but it took me ages to get my face straight before I returned to the room. :D OMG my 2 yr old did that to me last week. I was in bed half asleep at silly o clock in the morning and he came trotting into the bedroom saying here you go mummy and dropped a lovely turd into my hand. Well it was better than an alarm clock at getting me out of bed

A friend of mine who had twins had this problem - they both used to do it!...can you imagine.... Anyway her solution was to duct tape the nappy - I know it sounds hilarious, but she would put the diaper on them then whip around it with the roll of duct tape...obviously not on the skin, then she would use those scissors they have in hospital to cut bandages to cut them off....

Hello Ladies, oh wow you are bringing back the memories for me, I can assure you that it will pass, my daughter has not carried this decorating style into adulthood. I can also tell you that the slightest hint that I might mention some of her earlier habits has provided many funny moments. Shanni

this happened to me (word for word) last month. Pretty much my ds decided that he was going to do this, and then I would put him in the bath (i think he was doing it for the attention+extra bath time). I've now incorporated a few extra sensory play (play dough and spools of thread for him to string a long a piece of yarn) and snap at the crotch body suits that he still takes off. I think it's a sign of being ready for potty training, but my DS doesn't show all the other signs except for telling me when he wants a change (he's not talking too much, only has about 40 words and he's 27 months old--so he's a little behind). I started a thread about my sons poo smearing habits on Mumsnet, and I got some great great advice. Look it up in the behavior and development section and I posted under the name EandZ. G'luck! (and it'll pass soon)!

Poor you, yuk, one of the many joys of little ones eh?! I agree with the baby grow, you can use one of those simple vest type that have poppers just on the bottom. They should confuse him for a while!

I wouldnt agree that its too earl for potty training, the sooner they get used to it the better my DS was using the potty at 15 months old, try him with it see how he goes, and if all else fials the baby grow back to front should work :)

I put mine in a babygrow/jumpsuit backwards so the buttons were at the back and he couldn't reach it to take it off... frustrating perhaps, easier for me tho I did the same for my son because even if I made it impossible for him to get the nappy off he would stick his hand in there and fish the poop out :\:

put his nappy on backwards when he goes down for a nap, it will slow him up taking it off. If that fails, duct tape it shut. If you find my sanity when you are out looking for your mind, tell it to come home, I kind of miss it.

ah I remember that...my son used to do that too. I would put him for his nap and make sure he had on a pair of shorts or something that he couldn't pull off or maybe a babygro if he still has them? I would say it is too early for potty training. It is more the fascination and the fact that he has discovered how to take his nappy off. Pull ups are a god idea as he will be confused for a while and won't know how to take it off. In the meantime just try and put him down for a nap after he has filled his nappy...even if it means chaning his routine a bit. Your sanity is far more important!

Can you make him wear some kind of trousers with a belt or dungarees so that he can't physically get his trousers and nappy off? You get used to dealing with a certain amount of poo as a mum but certain things are still hard to handle. Hugs to you

Not unusual for kids to remove their nappy when it is soiled as it is uncomfortable for them. It is worth getting a potty and trying him with it before he goes for his nap. :)
