Is there any way to get a rough idea of how to gauge a child's progress against a norm?

I'm just not sure that the secondary education my DD is getting is all that great but don't know how to compare with other schools, if indeed it is possible to do so.

Sandy dogg i would be interested in the results if you do decide to sit your child through a few of these pappers. Just what is in the papers should give you an idea of what they should have covered. I will do, might not be for a day or so though :)

Thanks for that, Sarky. It gives me a starting point. We're not in Dubai so I don't know if the ministries are as diligent. I just feel that DD is free-wheeling. she never seems to have any homework, she says she gets it all done in school while the other kids are in Islamic studies. I can't put my finger on it specifically but I just feel something's not right.

You need to look at standardized tests for that age range based on your home country's educational authority. The only true way if you are wanting an individual assessment is to sit your child through some tests and see where she is on an average scale, ie way above average, average, below average. You could also look at some of the entrance examinations ffrom schools in your home country and see how your child fares when you sit her through them. Many schools have their tests (and answers) on their websites. This link is a good school in the UK as an example with entrance examinations, sit your child through them and you will have an idea of where the gaps are. http://www.mgs.org/index.php?option=com_docman&Itemid=347 edited by SarkySue62 on 25/01/2011

I assumed all the kids were taking standardized tests and some central reporting agency (ie government) would pull the results together. DS is going to take one at the end of the month...thought all schools Dubai-wide were taking them.
