Breastfeeding and exercise?

My supply is obviously very precious to me (and my DS lol!) and I have typically been before one of those people who's supply is easily affected by stress/ illness/ exercise - I want to know, with specific reference to exercising, whether or not my supply is simply affected due to hydration... If I drink even more water than I do now (I have to drink about 2 1/2 - 3l per day now to maintain decent supply) should I be able to exercise to my hearts content??? And how much more water would you recommend???

(I spent a day at the shops on Friday and trying on clothes with my baby belly, those hideous fleuro lights and extremely unflattering 360 degree mirrors... scary!!!)

HAK - the intake of calories is definitely NOT a problem ;) lol! The odd kg or so of chocolate I eat in one sitting definitely makes the calorie intake reasonable! Perhaps I should start with cutting that out a little huh! I just also think a little exercise will be good for my sanity! Hehe - that might do it! lol! On a serious note though, when I had That Moment, I started using an online food diary and logged all my food and drink intake - the database miraculously calculated all the stats and it was an interesting read... mainly to see the habits I'd got into (2 under 2 = 7+ cups of coffee a day and some serious snacking!), so by tweaking that, I could pretty much carry on eating what I usually ate and started losing the kilos, nice and slowly. The big thing for me, though, in conjunction with cutting down on the coffee and random nibbles was to work on my core muscles. You can do it anywhere - just like pelvic floor exercises - so if you're at your computer (hmmm), in a queue at the shops, etc, just have a go sitting or standing with your back straight and suck your tummy button as far towards your spine as possible and hold it. Don't stop breathing - you'll need to breath from your chest, rather than through your tummy. You'll find that by doing this often, it becomes second nature and will improve your posture (it's impossible to slouch if you're doing it) and give you a flatter-looking tummy. edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 13/04/2011

I do hope the kg's melt away :D Wouldn't that be lovely!!! I do plan on continuing bf-ing for as long as possible so I'll aim for that! It's not so much the weight (although there's a few kg's there that definitely need to move) it's more my muscle tone - or lack there of! My muffin top is testament to that! And obviously heading back home for a visit over summer I want to wow everyone ;) HAK - the intake of calories is definitely NOT a problem ;) lol! Look at this link for some more info. http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/mom-exercise.html It seems that the quantity of milk is not affected so much by exercising than rather the taste. Of course if you're sweating a lot you need to rehydrate. Don't be so hard on yourself though. You just gave birth a couple of months ago and went through a lot of stress. The baby belly will go away. I found that bf after DD was 6 months old really did the trick. For about half a year by body was clinging to those extra pounds, but then the kilos just melted. I bf until DD was 13 months and had lost all pregnancy weight plus a couple more kg at that point. I did yoga and pilates to help tone those muscles though. I'm sure that sort of exercise should be safe while bf, because it's not so strenous.

Don't forget that you'll also need to eat back at least some of your exercise calories so that you don't unwittingly dip under the minimum 1600 (this figure is the 1200 minimum recommended daily allowance for healthy weight loss plus 400 for breastfeeding)...

I'm no expert...but I found that if I did an hour of exercise (real exercise), I would need to replenish with 1.5-2 liters more than I normally drank and my supply was not affected. If I was just walking (done far more than actual exercise), I would just need one bottle to 1 liter more on the (few) days that I did walk. HTH and I feel you with the clothes trying on.
