Just wondering if the collective knowledge of EW had any good tricks to get them to go away?

As it stands, all my dry goods are in those lock-tight pots (may as well take out shares)which seems to keep them out of my food but I keep on finding them all over the place! It also seems to be the season for them.

It's not that they're horrid horrid, like cockroaches, but even so and old wives' tricks to keep them out of my cupboards would be most welcome.

oh this has just make me check the cupboards.... eurgh! flour full of weevils!! I feel ill, I've made muffins recently as well.... do you think they're harmful? DD had some... eeeek!! I don't think they're actually harmful (I admit to rinsing them out of the risotto rice), but then I found an unsealed bag of mixed nuts and raisins right at the back of my cupboard at the top and nearly heaved (and that takes a lot!) - it was crawling and because it had a transparent window, I could see inside. They'd basically laid their eggs in the raisins and you could see all the larvae growing, plus all the detritus that little beings make. The rest of the rice was in the bin, out and down the chute with a flash, along with some infiltrated basmati rice and The Bag. I've been decanting my [local'> flour into a clip container for a while now, and find that there are occasionally some hopefuls lurking under the first flap of the original packaging, but they've never actually got in, and none hatch out of the flour when it's in my sealed box. They never seem interested in sugar, just starchy things and I haven't ever seen any in my spices, but may now look a bit harder (although I do have cloves in my spice cupboard). Little blighters. The joys of living in thr tropics! edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 08/06/2011

We just clean out the kitchen cupboards every week, and I avoid buying anything local, i.e. local flour, local rice, etc. as that is what appears to bring in those horrid weavils. Thanks for the cloves tip. Will try it out! yes, I do too, but it's a pain in the neck, especially as they seem to like the expensive stuff - I had to chuck 750g of arborio rice because there were dozens of the blighters in it - AND it was meant to be sealed! I think I'll make up some little clove bags - you know, like the lavender ones grannies have in their underwear drawer! I too am especially noticing it in my rissoto rice - am beginning to wonder if they are actually coming in the bag to start with as I am placing the sealed bag inside a plastic jar and still getting them!

When I had this trouble last summer, I threw out all my spices, the ginger was alive!! But I still kept getting a few roaming the cupboard. After checking every single tub, pot, jar, they were actually coming from my pepper pot, through the little holes on the top of the shaker. Not had any problem since, except of course in brand new sealed rice or flour. My mum said that it was no better in the UK when we were kids. She just used to sieve the flour and throw out the bugs, couldn't afford to throw out the whole bag....yuk!!

My mum suggested cloves, so for the last several months I have'nt had any problems with them! Just scatter cloves in all your kitchen cupboards and draws and replace the cloves with fresh ones every couple of months.

Someone on here previously said that cloves kep them away! ooo - now that's the kind of thing I like! Thanks! I've found out the hard way that corn-flour kills them instantly, but it could get a bit messy!
