New Ramadan Rule???

Just had an interesting chat with a friend of mine who was out last evening in a hotel in JBR for a late supper with friends, left the hotel at 12:30am this morning and was standing outside waiting for a taxi.

Decided to light up a cigarette whilst waiting........................

A police car pulled up (on the footpath) and 2 police officers got out quite irate and one of them yanked the cigarette out of his mouth and stamped on it shouting "haraam, haraam in Ramadan" ?? Luckily another friend with him walked straight back into the hotel and brought the Concierge out to assist with translation.

Basically the Concierge was very upset with the police and their attitude and a fairly loud "discussion" continued until the police got back in their car and drove off. Not before they stated with a lot of finger pointing to my friend he had been warned????

The Concierge believed the police thought he was a tourist and would not know any better but to pay a fine......

Just wanted to share this with you all so if needed you have a "heads up" to the "new" rule!!!

why would a police officer say that during the night!!!!! come on!!!! we've been living here for 5 years and never heard of such a thing!! most of our friends smoke and spend their nights out in Ramadan, non of them went through something like that ever edited by amalzd on 10/08/2011 Just because we havent heard of it doesnt mean it doesnt happen.

I do know the difference between am and pm, is why I wrote 12:30am this morning......................... I too have been living here for over 7 years and have never heard of anything like it, which is why I sarcastically put a "new Ramadan rule"...................... You got it Sanddy_Dogg we to think the officers were trying to pull a fast one.

I don't know, hence my comment about grumpy officers. If you read the OP thoroughly you can see that it happened at night and that even the Concierge involved thought the police were pulling a fast one.

Well she said they'd been out for the evening and left the hotel at 12.30am this morning so I guess she knows the difference between night and day. Grumpy police officers perhaps?

This is impossible to happen at that time. she must have meant 12:30 p.m. not a.m. "because mostly the police officer could be smoking at 12:30 a.m.!!!" and no it is not a new role, it has been there since forever, fasting people don't smoke and if food and drinks are not allowed in public places during Ramadan then neither should smoking

she said 12.30 am = Nightime!! It not really a 'new' rule. http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/crime/eating-drinking-and-smoking-in-daylight-are-punishable-offences-1.666651
