in the past if you had a foreign licence but got an international driving licence you could drive a private car, but now the only people allowed to drive a private car have to have a uae driving licence, with a foreign licence you can only drive a hire car.
Neighbours' parents were here very recently and were told they could drive their son's personal car on an IDP. Can you please let us know where this other information is regarding people having to have a UAE driving licence to be able to drive UAE residents' privately owned cars. Many thanks for any info.
in the past yes, and its got a lot to do with your insurance company but i wouldnt trust it unless had in writing which i believe people have tried to get but couldnt, if you were to have an accident etc who knows what would happen. you used to be able to but recently ie in the last year or so its changed.

Hi Seashells, from my understanding, they should not. I remember when I arrived here, I read this very point somewhere. They said do not have your friends borrow resident's cars. They are only 'safe' if in a hired car. They must have a UAE license to drive a UAE car. Even when we wanted to buy a car, they would not let me test drive (even as a tourist at that point) without a UAE license because of this rule. I am sorry but I cannot remember where I read this, but I do remember reading this.
Does anyone know if a UK driving licence holder is allowed to drive cars in the UAE that are owned and insured in the UAE.
The reason for asking is that I have some visitors for the next few weeks, and I want to know if they can drive my car.
Your feedback is appreciated
