Question about selling a car

We are leaving Dubai at the beginning of December. My husband has already left and has left me with the task of selling our car. He's signed the transfer form but I just wanted to check what the deal is with collecting payment. The car is likely to sell for over 100k so I don't want to get cash. If I get a cheque, would it be standard practice to bank the cheque and then wait for it to clear before doing the transfer of registration?

Thank you ladies. Is there anywhere other than Dubizzle and ExpatWoman to list the car. I've had it on both for 5 days and haven't had a single call. I know it is Eid but it seems a little strange not to get any response at all.

As the others have said, absolutely wait for the cheque to clear or get the seller to give you a bankers cheque - the equivalent of a bankers draft. Far too many cheque bouncers not to be cautious.

If it's not a banker's cheque it is quite in order, and advisable, to wait until it clears and the money is in your account. edited by amelia on 02/11/2011

We got a banker's cheque from the buyer. It still took a couple of days to clear but it was pretty much guaranteed so we did the transfer on receiving the cheque.
