Hi ladies,

I got my BFP last week and will be due on 12 July. Last time I was pregnant, I went to my doc at around 5 weeks and she just did a blood test to confirm the pregnancy and told me to come back at 12 weeks for a scan.

Is it ok to book in with my doctor again at 12 weeks? This time I will be seeing Dr Braithwaite throughout the pregnancy and have booked an appointment for December at which time I will be 10-11 weeks pregnant then. Is that ok for a scan or is it best to wait until I am 12 weeks?

Its worth remembering that your regular 12 week dating scan is not the same as an NT scan. The dating scan is a routinely given scan to asses the approximate age and health of the baby, and the NT scan, or triple marker test, is specifically to determine andy chromosomal abnormalities/congenital heart problems etc. The NT scan is optional. I had my NT scan at 13 weeks at Foetal Medical Centre. You can have the scan at any time between 11 and 14 weeks, but as Kiwi said, it need to be done by a trained sonographer, not just your regular doc. Im not sure which clinic you are going to, but they may or may not have the specialist equipment there needed to perform this scan. Most people i know who had it, did so at the Foetal Medical Centre in Healthcare City. The triple test involves blood tests that, together with the nuchal fold scan, will be used to determine a percentage 'risk' of your baby having a chromosomal disorder. I had both done on the same day, and walked away with the results when we left (and a DVD of little one too!) Hope this helps.

Thanks Kiwispiers . That clears up a lot of my questions. My doctor for my last pregnancy really did not explain things very well. I am booked to see my doctor at 10 weeks. I presume that will be ok for the nuchal blood test? Or a subsequent visit can be booked accordingly.

The Nuchal Scan (12 week scan) is generally done in Radiology as it needs to be done by someone specifically trained in that area,(ie a sonographer/radiolgist vs the routine scans that your OBGYN does each visit which are just checking for a heatbeat, looking at position etc. If you are not sure of dates then its best to have a "dating" scan earlier as up to a certain point all fetuses are the same size per weeks (more or less) but then later on the pregnancy they can vary a lot from baby to baby. When you go for the 12 week scan they like you have a full bladder, or at least don't pee right before the scan although some Drs don't seem to think this is important, maybe phone ahead to check?. If you are not seeing a Dr before the 12 week point you should double check about when you need to do the blood test that goes along with the Nuchal scan, I cant remember whether you have that earlier or later than the scan itself?

When I popped in to the hospital they told me I could have a scan at 8 weeks just to check that it is a viable pregnancy but it was not necessary. So I think I will wait til the 12 weeks.

When I was in the US my first scan was at about 7 weeks of pregnancy. Here it is about the same.

Wow, that is a lot! I had 4 or 5 during my last pregnancy. Not sure how it works at American Hospital though.

Seems like they do an awful lot of scans here. My first pregnancy (not full term), the doc did one every month from 5 weeks to 20 weeks. For the second, my doc did one also at every visit from 6 weeks right until the end even during the weekly visits.

I now have an appt to see my doctor at American Hospital when I will be 10 weeks and then I have to have my scan at 12-15 weeks which they said will be carried out at a different dept and not by the doctor herself. Just wondering if by the time I go there in late December to see the doctor, will the appointments for the scans already be booked up? Last time I went to a doctor at a clinic and she did all the scans herself. For those that have had their scans at American Hospital, what did you think of them?

Ok, thanks ladies. I will check if I can get a 12 week scan once their bookings open up for late December. I don't want to go in too early and find they cannot do the NT scan.

Personally I would prefer to wait until the 12 week mark but they don't seem to encourage that here. In Aus, it is 12 weeks.

I think it all depends on what you want, really! I know at home (in the UK) you wouldn't have a scan until 12 weeks but here you can go as early as you choose, within reason. ETA: Congratulations! x edited by DubaiCat on 09/11/2011
