Weve just started using Aptimil AR which DS seems to be enjoying alot more than any other formula weve tried but the only thing is its very thick. We bought the level 3 medium flow teats for our avent bottles which have 3 holes but even that gets clogged mid feed and we end up with a very fussy baby again.

What teats are you ladies using with thick formula?

The three hole teats only increase speed for normal milk. The actual holes aren't bigger - just more of them. My DD is on Aptimal Comfort and we were recommended to mix as follows: - room temperature water - have the formula premeasured so it can all go into the bottle at once (we find the Avent formula container works well) - tip the formula in and shake straight away otherwise the milk goes sludgey - using a variable flow teat (we have Avent) made the world of difference although it did take a couple of days for DD to get used to the speed of which the milk comes out. We have been doing the above for about 3 months and is going well. One thing we found with the Avent bottles is that you need to screw the top on and then loosen slightly to make sure the air valves aren't squashed - otherwise feeding takes forever and DD is tired from all the extra sucking. If you use the Avent Variflow teat there are no instructions on the box (crazy) but basically there are three numbers on the bottom part of the teat - I, II and III. Just line up the right number (increases in volume I to II to III) with DS's nose to get the right flow. DD is teething at the moment so is not keen on sucking so much so whilst I normally use the I setting, this morning I used the III so she got more milk per suck - otherwise she gives up half way through the bottle. In a couple of days when she is feeling ok she will be back to I. BTW all the Aptimal products are almost half price if bought in the UK - not sure where you are from but if you know anyone who travels regularly up there it is well worth them putting a few boxes in their bags for you each time.

We used to keep a vacuum flask with near boiling water in it, pour it in her bottle and mix the formula, then to cool down formula we would put her bottle in room temp water. If baby is reallyyy upset, then add three quarters the amount of water you need at a hot tempurature, mix in the correct amount of formula, stir it, then add one quarter water thats cool room temperature, then stir slowly again. This results in nice warm milk. Also helps to prep before your babys feed, we would try most times to have it ready before she would get too upset and cry, I know how distressing it is to hear them :)

Thanks sourskittleashnut but how do you manage that? When our newborn starts screaming we dont have the time to mix the formula in near boiling water and wait for it to cool. edited by JBR_Mummy on 26/08/2012

Hi there, We used Aptamil Comfort for abit which is also quite thick. Make sure you're mixing the formula properly. The water has to be really hot when you add the formula, about 70 degrees, then swirl in the formula (dont shake the bottle that adds air) to mix it, let it cool and then give it to your baby while its still warm. If the water is cooled-down the formula powder wont mix properly and be too thick to go through the teats well.
