Im just wondering if some of you ladies could share your experiences with using Cloth nappies. I have just heard about an incident at a major nappy factory in Japan that is likely to cause the cost of nappies to increase and possibly problems with supply..

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/9577127/Global-napp...

It made me think about cloth nappies and whether that is a viable option here - I wasnt given any information on cloth nappies in my ante-natal class and i havent actually seen any on sale anywhere - or maybe i just havent been looking! Its quite a big thing in the UK and local councils often provide incentives, classes and schemes to encourage their use.

Can you ladies who have used or are using cloth nappies give me your feedback? Does the work involved outweigh the savings? Are there savings to be made - cloth nappies seem to be an expensive business. What are the items that you need to buy? Where can they be purchased from?

FYI - im a FTM due at the end of this month!

Would really appreciate your feedback! Thanks..

Hi, Actually I have just bought ALL my nappy things from the lady from may angels! She has everything including different types, wetbags, baby organic soaps and creams and washing powder and the best bit for me was that she explained how things worked and how to save me money too. My baby is 3 months now and the nappys are fitting great and I also got a really great cushie tushies one that has both a cloth and disposable inside insert but of course everything is baby safe with no toxins in the disposable bit. It's the bamboo that makes things great! I wanted to give you the contact to help getting advice, her name is sophie and the number is 0555147182 the name is may angels. Good luck with the new baby and hope I helped! Shell

Hi, I used cloth diapers on my second child from when he turned 2 months onwards, up till he turned 2. By then I was a bit more in control of other aspects of home, taking care of new baby's needs, so I could deal with issues arising from cloth nappies more calmly! I made my own microfiber inserts by buying a dozen microfiber hand towels from Dragon mart and folded them in thirds length wise. I bought all my cloth diapers online from the States. Mostly Tiny Tush, but as my baby got older and developed chunky thighs, I bought a few Happy Heineys. Also bought 2 Tots Bots while on vacation in UK from Tesco supermarket and they were the best, longest lasting cloth diapers I have ever used. For the wash routine, I bought an 8 L bucket with lid from Ramez discount center in Sharjah and eventually ordered a big Fuzzibunz hanging waterproof diaper bag, also had a waterproof wet bag for when out and about. I have a front-loading washing machine. I used Purex Free and Clear liquid laundry detergent or the Easy non bio powdered detergent, both from Carrefour/ Coop. I made a home-made poop scraper from an empty 2 L milk jug. I taught my house-maid how to do the wash routine, how to scrape poop from the diapers into the toilet immediately, dry in the sun, never iron the diapers or the inserts, etc. (Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to do it without the co-operation and assistance of my then-housemaid.) I never used cloth diapers when we went on holiday or at night. For night-time, I used a bunch of diff brands (faves were Carrefour own brand and Sanita Bambi) but eventually returned to Pampers Premium. The only head-ache was the diaper cream, I had to order some CJ Butter from the States. Just Kidding on Sheikh Zayed road now sells the Imsie Vimsie pocket diapers and the imsie vimsie diaper liners. the diaper liners are necessary when treating diaper rash with diaper cream, and very useful when you're anticipating runny poop and don't want to scrape it all off :) edited by Apricot on 03/10/2012

first all of all congratulations scurry77. all the best for your delievery :) i use cloth nappies and can share my experience with you. i bought 6 bonnibuns with inserts,2 mothercare nappy wraps,2 from babyshop, 2 itti bitti before my ds was born. he was born ok but then after 15 days he started gaining weight (touch wood). my bonnibuns were all in one size diapers. but since my ds grew at a very good speed so these diapers became tight for him in just 1 month! also i used to put pampers sensitive at night so that he can sleep rather then we jostling him awake for diaper changes all the time. i had few home made inserts too. my mom bought very soft towel cloth and cut rectangular pieces from it. so i had enough. yes cloth nappies are expensive but i havn't compared with the pampers cost at any time. after deleivery you just have little time for yourself settling in with the baby that all the saving ideas go in the bin :) so far i havn't kept the track. now a days i bought 3 cute looking jeans style cloth diaper from babyshop and managing with that as nothing else fits my baby! so i put him in pj's and keep on changing when he wets. there are different websites where you can buy. there is also a lady, search her on google by the name of mayangels who sells cloth nappies, alternatively there used to be a lady at arte souq in times square who sold cloth nappies starter packs for newborns. but they were all white in colour. as for the shopping list you need to decide how many diapers you want, few inserts will come with that and rest you can make yourself, diaper cream still required sometimes. and you can gain from grittt1 view too :)

Hi Scurry77, Although environmentalist would encourage their use, but putting it to practice is another thing altogether.. i tried to use them and failed miserably because.. well.. THE HASSLE.. !!! since newborn babies get wet so soon you have to change too often which means being on ur toes all the time, since you dont want your poor baby to be uncomfortable just cause you are late changing her/him.. then cleaning up the poop is such a messy business ... and again newborns go many times a day.. I used homemade cloth nappies so maybe i suffered more.. maybe there are some sophisticated products out there which are better to use.. i have heard of disposable cloth nappy services where they provide you with 12 nappies a day and collect the dirty ones at the end of the day and provide you with 12 for the next... however i have no idea if this service is available in Dubai.. and i m sure this would be an expensive solution compared to diapers... In my opinion the hassle definitely out weights the savings if there are any..i simply did not have enough time to maintain cloth nappies.. hope you are able to make a good decision.. Goodluck
