Appreciate all your replies. Where can I buy the flaxseed and can i mix it with his daily weetabix at breakfast? The kiwis do work! On days where things have happened easily I realised he ate kiwi the previous day. Problem is he is not always that keen on them! As for the brown sugar with water, how do you get a toddler ti drink it. Can it be lukewarm??
I would go with prune juice as well.
It's completely natural and works wonders. With other laxatives, you have to be very careful about the duration you use them and consistently keep an eye out for side effects.
Besdies...believe it or not, I know a few kids who actually like the prune juice taste.
DS had awful constipation a few weeks ago and was literally holding it in because it had got so large and hard it was too painful for him to get out :(. Awful. His paed gave us Duphalac and told me to up his fruit, veg and water intake and touch wood, he seems to be back on track. She did say they could give themselves tiny tears around their bottoms and the pain makes them try to hold it in, which in turn makes the constipation worse so it's better to get it sorted sooner rather than later.
Re the cause, she asked if we were going all out to potty train as sometimes if you're too intense too early it can backfire. It's not the case with us and I still have no idea what caused it, but it's worth thinking about if you're potty training.
I had the same problem with all my children and Benefiber worked a treat. I didn't need to use it for long, it just helped to get things moving (scuse the pun!) then all was fine. Last time I was potting training and it was needed I couldn't get Benefiber anywhere so got a Clear Fiber which worked just as well. They are both just soluble plant fiber, totally natural and easy to disguise in yogurt or juice.
Like you at first nervous about giving a laxative but my children's ped told me that constipation is normally easy to fix physically but if you leave it too long and it becomes an ingrained psychological problem then it can take years to fix. I'm so pleased I followed his advice and got it sorted quickly!
Try prune juice. The way I do it is to soak a few pitted prunes in boiling water. Or simmer for a while. Leave in water overnight. Strain and serve. Find it lighter and less gloppy than the stuff in supermarkets. Works in a couple of days.
I think the idea with the laxatives is to break to pattern of holding it in, as they get fearful of the pain and the holding it in is what causes the constipation regardless of diet, lactulose is essentially just water attracting sugar, like giving prune juice and should be safe short term.
My DD had terrible problems at same age when living in NZ. I used glycerine suppositories, upped her water intake and gave her lots of kiwi fruit (in NZ one can buy squeezed kiwi juice and a lot of nurses etc there recommend it..I think it's used in Gerentology wards there) My midwife started me on it...I was drinking one small glass a day in first trimester then gallons if it (LOL) in my final trimester. I don'tthink you can buy here but kiwi fruit should do the same.
MY DD drank a lot of milk so I cut that down and upped her fluids. Good luck. It's horrid to watch.
Since potty training 3 months ago DS 2.5 years has struggled with constipation every few days. It's very painful and he is in serious discomfort for about 10mins, breaking into a sweat from the effort usually. The stools are quite big. I didn't do anything initially as u read somewhere this usually happens with potty training. Any advice as to what to do? Paed told me he needs a laxative as this could lead to lifelong problems re fear of pain but I'm not sure I want to give him laxatives. Any ideas? Thanks in advance
Suppositories are the best and although it isnt nice inserting them in that area they are effective and work quickly
Glycerin ones are very natural and inexpensive. Fybogel is also good however good luck getting he/she to drink that as it sets very quickly ( a bit like jelly)
Try the natural lazatives first, Senokot used to do a syrup, Lactulose i am not sure is for toddlers. I wouldnt keep relying on lazatives though as they can cause long term damage. May i ask what your sons diet is like? Fresh orange used to help children too.
