and get her spayed?
She is only a kitten herself and we took her on, got her microchipped and vaccinated and were planning.....to get her done, soon. Now we appear to be too late. She still lives outside but it looks like we have a predicament on our hands.

Well Lola, because as far as I can tell, FF and other similar groups aren't getting any funding from the govt, it's all donations, and the municipality seems to just euthanise or catch the strays. If they even subsidised such operations for pregnant strays, it would encourage more people to adopt them and at the same time stop them from breeding and given time, the stray population *should* start to reduce. As it is, most people don't bother because sadly on the list of bills like food, rent etc stray animals don't exactly take out top spot. Even having 50% govt funding for a first time 'adopter' would encourage people to do something about it who may not otherwise for fear of the initial expenses. You know what I mean. FF can only do so much, and many of the vets who give discounts are doing it from goodwill, surely if the govt chipped in a bit, it would encourage more vets to provide this kind of operations etc to people wanting to 'adopt' strays....

[u'>UPDATE:[/u'> The cat had an U/S this morning and she is 25-28 days pregnant with a minimum of 4 kittens, possibly 6. I thought that it would bother me, but I felt nothing. After many calls to lots of Vets, I have an appt for her to be spayed. It is disgusting that this is not Govt funded, and I told the Municipality Vet, and after our experience of helping a cat, getting her vaccinated and microchipped then this.......grrrr..... Anyway, I feel sorry for this cat, but it is what it is. Why should it be goverment funded? You made a choice when you took the cat on you therefore have to take responsibility for it's costs as every responsible owner does. As soon as you feed a stray it is no longer a stray, its yours. I note you mention cost a bit, spend the money and make sure you send your cat to a reputable vet otherwise you may well find the costs far greater or a complete waste.

I am a Veterinary Nurse & although I've been in the industry for ages, it is still heartbreaking to have to put to sleep perfectly healthy & happy kittens/puppies who's only crime is being born at all... It's a horrible decision you had to make but definitely the best one... And good on you for taking responsibility of this little kitty! So many people would just put their hands up & say "But, she's not mine!" Adding to the problem of strays in UAE! Reading through this thread I was just thinking about you folk who have to do this on an ongoing basis. You have my utmost thanks and appreciation for what you do,it Is anything but an easy job. I have had to terminate a pregnancy recently on a feral girl roaming on the outskirts of our property, the poor vet. Nurse at our shelter vet was in tears that day as it was just getting too much for her. As you put it 'their only crime is being born at all' so heartbreaking but so true.Take care. edited by Nomad on 06/03/2013

It's 4-6 fewer kittens looking for a home or struggling to survive, is what it is.

Oh gosh, I would do it ! We had a similar situation, stray 'kitten' who adopted us and she was pregnant. We now have 4 cats ........ it's impossible to find anyone to take a kitten from you. We tried Feline Friends, the Vet, all of our friends, DH's work colleagues, school, dubizzle, no one was interested. I really regret that we didn't terminate when we first realised she was pregnant. Don't know what we will do when it's our time to move on to our next post !

We had a kitty coming to our house last spring. She was sweet, cute and I think pregnant. I told our vet and he said to catch and bring her in to terminate the pregnancy. I cringed at the thought and he reminded me of all the stray and unwanted cats here. As much as I didnt want to do this I agreed with him. However, this kitty didnt return after the vets visit so I never did catch her. Feline friends have so many cats and kittens to deal with I think terminating the pregnancy is better. They have high vet bills and reply on donations, volunteers and kind vets. I have seen one coordinator or maybe she runs it, not sure.,butive watched her in action with two phones, begging for low vet bills, administering meds on her own because its cheaper and running her home like a cattery. These guys need help, not more cats. By the way, if anyone wants to volunteer at feline friends please do so! Even an hour one weekend at the book fair helps!! This is just my opinion, may not be feline friends! edited by dogcatcher on 04/03/2013 edited by dogcatcher on 04/03/2013

She is probably just out on a date! Don't worry, your kitty will be back. if you are feeding her and she is accustomed to your love she will be back. I also have 2 rescue kitty sisters and they were older than I thought when they found us. It just took one night of hooking up with her 'boyfriend' and she was pregnant. I also had mine dewormed, vaccinated and given a checkup but was just waiting for my appt at the Sharjah shelter. She was apparently 3 weeks along but the vet said it isn't a problem to spay while pregnant and she is in perfect health today. I encourage you to get her fixed as earlier is obviously better. Good for you for taking her into your life.

maybe she was further along than you thought. If she is not home for a few days you might want to look for a secluded place nearby :)

Oh well. She must have sussed my plans and has not been home since yesterday evening. She always sleeps in her 'box' on the doorstep, but not last night. I was going to take her for a scan this morning.

Thanks SueB Yes the municipality did say that they could only do the scan as they no longer perform surgical procedures. I shall start the calls tomorrow then and hopefully get her in this week.

not much else to add. A hard decision to have to make that call as it does go against all we hope for but....it is necessary :( ....you could let her have them then search for homes or terminate now and don't have to worry about putting 3 - 5 or more babies out there with uncertain futures. So, I am in full agreement for termination as well. You might call around to some of the newer vets as they could be a bit less expensive. Unfortunately, you have taken on this baby rather than fostering her so a discount might be hard to get :( Certainly worth a try though :0. Not sure if the Municipality vets do this, doubt they would do a termination and not sure if I would have them do it either!......

Give Feline Friends a call.Tell them you have rescued this kitty and can they help you in getting the best deal. I am no longer in DXB but did a lot of fostering for FF and used Nad Al Sheba not sure if they still work with FF.... Also you could phone the Bin Kitty Collective as they also doTNR I believe.

It is really great that you have taken her under your wing. I would terminate.Have had to do this a few times .I am a big animal animal lover but over time I have realized you have to do what is in the best interest of the animal and the situation. There are just too many strays in DXB and finding homes can be daunting and kitten season will be upon you soon. FWIW it is also safer to terminate earlier than later. A hard decision I know but one only you can decide on.:( edited by Nomad on 03/03/2013 Thanks. Do you know the cheapest vet for this? Preferably Mirdif end.

See what SueB says...I'm sure she will have good advise. I'm with Sam7. We have to be a bit pragmatic and practical, horrible as it sounds maybe, but it's true...there are just not enough (good/loving/forever) homes to go around for the amount of cats that need them.

what does the vet say is best for her? They say little except to quote me a price for early pregnancy and another for late pregnancy. I will take her for a dh30 ultrasound at the municipality vet and ascertain the seriousness. Will continue this thread after I have done a scan. ETA Sorry, I have not had her seen yet, just spoken on the phone. I shall see what SueB recommends too. edited by CallMeMaybe on 03/03/2013

I definitely would if I were in the same situation - there are way too many abandoned and feral cats struggling to survive in the UAE already, and no where near enough loving homes to go around, despite fab organisations such as Bin Kitty Collective and Feline Friends and others doing their best to find places for all of them :( Could not agree more, far too many unwanted bin kittens/cats in this city.
