Hi, my DH was also diagnosed with Papillary cancer last year. We searched around and met 3 doctors, finally ended up having the thyroidectomy at City Hospital. They now have a RAI facility, so we didn’t have to move around hospitals for each treatment - that was a big plus. No need to carry around documents & records all the time! DH is booked for the RAI this month - under LID now :( We’re seeing Dr. Baha, it’s been only few consultations so far, but seems very nice & attentive. All the best on your treatment!

Hi there this is quite an old thread but just seeing if anyone is still here in Dubai? I need to have a blood test and am wondering if any of you have somewhere you could recommend? I was diagnosed also with Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma mid 2012 and although I have had a complete thyroidectomy and 3 rounds of radioactive Iodine I still have a naughty node in my neck requiring yearly MRI 'S and 6 monthly blood tests. All my treatment has happened in Aus as I was diagnosed while we were living in Jakarta. So hopefully you ladies are still around :-) Thanks!

Thank you so much for your reply! I wish I had looked more closely into doing it here. Reservations were primarily about organisation, sticking with timings, having thyrogen available when agreed. Not about anything else. But I have now made arrangements to have this done in Italy ( will combine with a trip to do other things - beforehand) I leave tomorrow . At the moment my dose is going to be 100 - so similar period of isolation as you I imagine. Did you do isolation beyond day 3 or just follow the precautions about distance / contamination etc? I have heard a lot of people - mums - finding the isolation the hardest part. Because I'm going away I will have 3 weeks apart. My husband will hold the fort and take care of our daughter. I would love to keep in touch if you are willing to share experiences. Lucia.campbell at btinternet.com I hope you are doing well now. I was told here that I should do withdrawal but some think there is no difference. I am apprehensive about the time gap between completion of tt and RAI - 2 months - given that I have been diagnosed with poorly differentiated carcinoma. But the docs who did the op and endo in Italy were quite relaxed about it all. :-0 - here in dubai they were more concerned - I have also been quoted 3 different doses of RAI ,!!! Go figure!

Hi Lulla2, I'm not really sure what your doctor's reservations are about Dubai Hospital but I thought that the doctors, nurses and technicians there were really competent and very nice. They made a potentially challenging situation much easier. The hospital was a little disorganized and I had to follow up to make sure that things were done on schedule. It was definitely different from a private hospital. However, my overall experience with them as far as the RAI was concerned was good. I was given 103mci of radioactive iodine, but that was based on the nuclear medicine physician's assessment of my requirements. (This dose was determined by the doctor at Dubai Hospital after my endocrinologist sent all my reports to them.) I don't think there is any limit on the dose they are able to administer. I went through withdrawal prior to the RAI. My decision was based on my endocrinologist's recommendation. Dubai Hospital does not require withdrawal and tries to schedule the RAI according to the option you prefer. As I had decided to go through withdrawal, they scheduled RAI six weeks after the start of withdrawal. Had I gone for the shots, the RAI would have been scheduled sooner. Although my doctor told me that patients' reactions to withdrawal vary and some of his patients don't feel any different after going through it, I definitely did not enjoy the experience :) For me, the most challenging part of the whole experience was the time spent in isolation. Because my kids are very young, I had to stay away from them for 2 weeks. I spent 3 days out of those 2 weeks at Dubai Hospital. I was not in a hospital setting the rest of the time. Lulla2, I hope you go through a shorter period of isolation. I hope this helps. I will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

aaargh wish I had seen your reply sooner!! r2013 I would find it really useful to hear of your RAI experience at Dubai Hospital. My doc here put me off it. Did you have withdrawal of thyrogen shots? What dose did you receive and how did you feel? Carambar - i would recommend Dr Barbaccia at American Hospital - ENT surgeon . He is very good. Endocrinologist Dr Donatella Casiglia at American hospital is also very good - and she's his wife. Coffegirl I would find it really useful to know more about your friend's choice of surgeon in Vienna do you know what type of cancer she had? Thanks all

Hi Lulla2, I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer about a year ago, and was able to get RAI at Dubai Hospital. I thought I would let you know in case you are looking for an alternative to going overseas for the RAI. As far as I'm aware, the only requirement is that you need to have a DHA (Dubai Health Authority) health card. If you're interested, it might be worth calling Dubai Hospital to find out. Carambar, I deal with Dr. Baha, the endocrinologist at Mediclinic City Hospital and he's really good. He really takes the time to understand your concerns and address them thoroughly and throughtfully. I hope this helps. Good luck ladies :)

Anyone on this forum or know of anyone with thyroid cancer here in dubai who would be interested in swapping experiences / chat/ give each other support? Tia :-) Hi Lulla, may i ask which doctor did you go to? Asking coz i've been having inflated Lymph nodes for over 6 mths now and no one knows what it is. Quite concerned as it is not going. It was affecting my ears, so went to an ENT, but he said it is not that and he didn't know who to refer me to.

A friend of a friend of mine has recently had some kind of surgery relating to thyroid cancer; I don't know her all that well to know the details, but she had to go to Vienna for the surgery in November ish I think? I could get her number for you?

Great news that all is well with him. Daily thyroid meds are not that much of a hassle , but did he have parathyroid damage? So on calcium? That's a bit less fun. I had my surgery - two ops - first one half then the other after the diagnosis. RAI next but not available in dubai so going to Italy for it. I imagine he had a low risk type. If anyone else is out there do get in touch.

No, he's in the UK and had radio-iodine there at local hospital .... He's been about 5/6 years clear now ... Although obviously on meds forever due to thyroid / parathyroids being removed ... Are you going for surgery first / soon?

Thank you Assisi. Is he in dubai? I have been recently diagnosed and I'm sure he's well moved on to enjoy life - and as a young man not probably interested in chatting to a Middle Aged woman - ha ha! However, do you know what kind of cancer he had? And where he did radioiodine? I imagine not in dubai. Thanks

My brother had it a few years ago when in his mid-twenties. Two surgeries, and two/three rounds of radio-iodine therapy sorted it out :). It had gone into his lymph nodes before it was diagnosed .... Happy to put you in touch if needed :)
