Hello All, my 9 month old has CMPA according to his pedia. I am not sure if this diagnosis is definitive. He never had diarrhea, blood in stools, eczema, etc. He had flu at that time of his diagnoses and he was throwing up milk because he was coughing so hard. He was on Liptomil HA before and Doc recommended Novalac Allernova, but since there is no stock, we used Aptamil Pepti Junior and he refuses to feed.

Anyone out there in the same predicament?

An alternative could be camel milk, its normally tolerated by children and adults with CMPA. Studies by the US National Institute of Health show negative reations to camel milk protein in children with cow's milk intolerance. Its available pasteurised and homogenised. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21703103

Hi, If you still require Novolac Allernova, please contact [email protected]. He is the Med Rep for Novolac. They are excellent in their customer service. My son has been on this milk for over a year. He hated it on day 1 but now, thing else seems to be good enough for him taste wise. He did have CMPA and is very gradually growing out of it at 19 months. Good luck.

@Gingerdee, I really do not want him to miss out on regular food and I am 99% convinced he does not have CMPA. So I guess we will go just go bout the normal way. Reading the posts in the FB support group makes my heart ache for the kids and parents. I really hope your daughter outgrows the allergy soon! Thank you for all your answers! You guys are awesome!

Gaaad! Thank you! Yes! There really is no point! Just a first time mom that worries a lot. I was asking the Doc why he is giving him that type of (hydrolized) milk since he does not have any symptoms, he said that his allergy is in his chest (he had a flu!). And, this killed me, "Don't you want what's best for your baby?". Mommy's guilt! Oh well, we had been giving him Liptomil HA since he will not take Aptamil Pepti. So here's hoping for the best! .. He is having ..yogurt...so far no reaction. Yoghurt is full blown cows milk protein, there is no point in giving a hydrolised formula if you are giving yoghurt, and if there is no allergic reaction to yoghurt, then there is no cows milk allergy. Why not just stick with the formula that has been fine up until now? can you not get it anymore? Besides the one off vomiting stint, have there been any other issues/symptoms that make your Dr think there is an allergy? edited by che731 on 13/03/2014

There is milk powder in most (but not all) store bought breads and the fact he is tolerating yoghurt would suggest maybe its not CMPA - or that he can tolerate milk proteins in some forms. Yoghurt is one of the later dairy products you would introduce on the milk ladder. So it's looking very promising for you! The trouble with changing his milk frequently is that sometimes it can upset their tummies too so can make things confusing. I don't know about drs in RAK, but I looked around for a paed who had a special interest in allergies as a lot have been known to dismiss CMPA as not a "real" allergy and have given out fairly shocking advice tbh. Get that second opinion and hopefully you will get some answers soon! I agree, the other parents on the Facebook forum really open your eyes to how difficult allergies can make things! I feel incredibly lucky to have a child who seems to have (almost) grown out of it already.

Thank you gingerdee, I'm so happy with your advise. We're from the Philippines and I spoke to several mom-friends and paeds but they just tell me change milk until he finds one that suits him. We had been giving him Liptomil HA since January, with no reaction at all. Been feeding him "normal" food since 6 months. He is having store bought sliced bread, yogurt, bouillabaisse soup, he even had brownies with nuts, so far no reaction. I saw the posts in the forum and the things they are going through is overwhelming! I am a full time working mom, we are living in RAK and the resources are scarce! I hope he doesn't have it or if he does, its temporary. Thank you again for taking the time to share your knowledge.

I found that the most difficult thing was trying to make sure she got enough calories - the main foods to get fats into babies are dairy products, but I used a lot of olive oil or nuttelex (dairy free "butter") in cooking and tried to persuade her to eat avocado. Have you discovered a milk alternative to use in cooking? I used 'koko' a coconut based milk with added calcium - you can get it in the change initiative. They also sell rice based puddings a little like yogurts that are dairy free and they have 'cream' made with oats. Also there is a lot of calcium in sardines, sesame seeds and almonds. Sorry if you know all of this already, just trying to think of things that were helpful to me! I would get a drs opinion on the formula, but if he can tolerate an HA formula without reacting then where is the harm? The only long term effect I think would be caused if he had blood or mucous in his stools, but like I said you should check that out with a dr, I'm no expert. I also saw a dietitian at mediclinic dubai mall who went through a food diary with me to check that My lo was getting an adequate diet - she was happy with what I was doing so I didn't change anything but I found it reassuring to have her look over it. I can't remember her name sorry. Oh and my insurance didn't cover the consultation but as a one off appointment it wasn't too pricey. We started to introduce dairy via a milk ladder (loads of info on that Facebook group) at 12 months and by 13 months my dd was off the aptamil pepti and taking bottles of boiled cows milk! She can't tolerate raw milk but is otherwise fine with all other dairy, and we're planning on trying the raw milk again soon. Hopefully if it is CMPA your lo will have a successful reintroduction in a short while too!

Thank you Gingerdee. Your answer is very helpful! I was planning to have him tested for the allergies but I don't think I will go through that now. But I will visit another pedia soon for second opinion. I did found that group in Facebook and I am reading through the threads, I am learning a lot. I posted a question as well and the ladies there are fantastic. At least for now my worries are abated! I do not think my son has CMPA but I would rather not risk it. Still I am careful in introducing new food to him and reading through the ingredients. Actually, my main concern is what will be the long term effect if I do not give him the special formula and just stick to an HA formula. I hope your daughter will outgrow this!

Hi My dd was diagnosed with CMPA at 5 months. She had severe vomiting after drinking formula milk (she was otherwise bf) she had a rash the first couple of times I gave her formula but never had and ******/mucousy stools etc. We eliminated dairy and then soya from her diet and I continued to bf. we saw dr fadil at city hospital and I was happy with his management (we saw a couple of other drs before that who I didn't have much confidence in). A huge help was a Facebook support group that a good friend of mine helped set up - lots of mums in the same situation it's called CMPAsupport they also have a lot of information and NHS documents and you can ask as many questions as you like. My dr was keen to do allergy testing but I ended up declining them - they can give false positives as well as false negatives so the result would always have been under question. They say the only true way to see if there is an allergy is to exclude the allergen, and see if symptoms reduce and then reintroduce and look for a reaction. Maybe if you're not sure of the diagnosis you should consider a second opinion? We moved on to aptamil pepti at 12 months, I mixed it with breast milk at first and gradually increased the amount of formula until she took a full bottle, but she took to it no problem. I have heard of some people adding vanilla or milkshake powder to formula but I was keen to avoid that. Sorry don't think I'm much help! Happy to try to answer questions if I can though...
