British gypsy travelers don't look like other European Roma? I thought that gypsies/roma came from India and Egypt but British travelers look so pale ... does anyone know the history?

There are extensive lists of names of travelling families on the net, for example http://website.lineone.net/~rtfhs/journal4.html Some of the families named there are very well known in parts of the UK and run very, very successful business now in the leisure/entertainment industry. Many of the fairgrounds, amusement arcades, bars and restaurants on coastal towns are run by the same families. Very very shrewd and successful businessmen to work with.

It's because they are not Roma. Travelers are mostly of Irish stock, but some are Scots. They used to be called Tinkers because they were itinerant tinsmiths, many people believe they are the descendants of Celts dispossessed by the Romans and later the Angles and Saxons. True travelers have unfortunately been joined, and confused with people who may have some traveler blood but frankly have chosen the lifestyle as an excuse for antisocial behaviour.
