I've had a Mirena coil for just over 18months - almost straight away my periods stopped and I haven't had one since. Such an fantastic thing living in the sun and I have saved a fortune on tampons. It was a little ouch getting it fitted but it has much lower levels of hormones than the pill I was on which is why I originally changed. Plus if you are unhappy, you can have it taken out really quickly. I had it done in the uk so cannot comment on Dubai services, but I would definitely recommend as an alternative to the pill

Is Mirena the most popular one? Also, do IUDs stop periods altogether? (Sorry bit of a numpty question). TIA Tigerlily, one of the know side effects of IUDs are longer more painful periods. I have only ever had the copper one, and was happy with it but it did change my cycle which went to 26 days as opposed to 28 days without. I do think the Mirena is the most popular one for those who can afford it. I am also battling to get Cerazette, has anyone had any success yet?

IF i was to have another one, I would look at the copper one for me, not Mirena. I had it taken out after 18 months as it didn't work well with my body - I had all sorts of side effects - many I'm still trying to get right. I believe I am very much in the minority for these side effects so don't let that put you off. The upside of not having periods for months on end was pretty nice though.

I do not know anything about the copper one. The Mirena delivers a low dose of progesterone into the uterus. Periods are meant to be lighter or can stop altogether. I am not the best person to ask as I am breastfeeding at the moment.

I'm considering IUD after 15 years on the pill - the brands I've tried here give me headaches and I am running low on my stash of Microgynon. But I have some questions. Is it better to have the ones with hormones or copper ones without? I was thinking hormones as have gotten used to having short, light periods while on the pill - does this make sense? Is Mirena the most popular one? Also, do IUDs stop periods altogether? (Sorry bit of a numpty question). TIA

I thought that the price was great considering it lasts for 5 years, and no more bother about contraception.

Think approx 2,800/3k sounds about right. Glad I had the scan as she was fitting it though, my gynae didn't like the position and had to remove it and insert a new one immediately. Not nice at the time, but wouldn't want another accident!

The doctor indicated that it was required for a medical reason.... The coil is prescribed for people with heavy periods.

wow didn't think it would cost that much! how did you manage to claim most ladies I have spoke to said you can't claim because it is classed as contraception. I got mine fitted in the UK so no ultra sound after, thanks for the info though.

Hi, yes I had one fitted at Cooper's Health Clinic on Al Wasl Road. It was my first time so I have nothing to compare it to, but both gynaecologists were great (there is one available on Saturday). The procedure was painless and quick. 450 dhs for the initial consult (not sure if you need this if you already have one), 700 dhs for the coil and 500 dhs for the fitting consult. 450 dhs for follow up ultrasound to check the position. The doctor filled out the insurance form and I claimed it on insurance:)
