VISS is on the border of Sharjah and Dubai (off Alittihad Rd)
I live mear Dubai Airport/Festival City area and it akes me 15 mins or so to get there.
Jumeriah is further out, there are busses I know that go out to there, Arabian Ranches the Palm etc....Not sure of pick up times etc...
AIS is further into Sharjah I believe, not exactly sure where i think it runs off Emirates Road
Thanks Julie, which of the australian schools is closer to Jumeriah? My hubby will be working near dubai airport and we plan to live in Jumeriah somewhere as all our old friends are down the springs end of town? txs
Hi Andicap
The Victoria International school is VISS. Website is undergoing a revamp so not too good!
Yes I meet the new Principal at AISM I came over for Anne Maree and Mr Syme's farewell dinner, and he was there.
So if your daughter is year 4 there that would be "grade 5 " here so last year of Junior school.
The schools are different but similar, academically this school is very strong! but as it is new it is building in other areas such as sports etc, in saying that it was a busy few months ending the year.
If you want to know more email me howelldj6 at Bigpond dot com. It is a full Victorian curriculum at the school the Sharjah and Victorian governments are "Partners" in the venture. so for me the academics were always going to stay true to OZ. They use all Victorian text books etc and all staff from OZ mostly Victoria
My kids grew up in Asia until they were 14/15 and we moved here. they adjusted quite well! They are 17 and 18 now. The campus here is amazing and the Junior school is big with lots of students, the Middle school is building as id the senior school. AISM is a great place and I miss it alot was a great atmosphere there and Community, I was president of the PA there for 4 years so know the school very very well :)
as I say contact me if you have any questions. We may even know some of the same people :) I still remain in contact with many people there
Thanks guys, is the Victoria International the AIS there? My daughter is only 9 and will be going into year 4 this sept. I'd be interested to hear your comparisons Julie, we were very happy with AISM, they got a new principal this year and are extending the school, all very positive as far as i can tell, my daughter loved it anyway. Basil, no we don't really travel round that much, we'd been in Dubai 8 years before moving to KL, which didn't work out as we planned, and then hubby got a job in Perth, I don't know if we've been in middle east too long, but we just can't really adapt to life in the 'real world' and when a really good job came up for hubby back in dubai, well, my daughter considers dubai 'home' as its the only one she's ever known, and we had a good life there and wonderful friends, what to do??? schooling has always been the issue there tho and I wasn't really happy with the british curriculum, and my daughter thrived in AISM, which I believe was NSW curriculum? but I digress, I really just want to weigh the pros and cons of AIS and if there's a better alternative, thanks for your thoughts guys
Hi Andicap
My kids attend the Victoria international school, both are doing their VCE- final years.we have been there 3 years. the school is on the border of Sharjah /Dubai on Mamzar lagoons. if you use busses coming iN from dubAi is no problem the morning traffic out ofsharjah is horrid, but as I say iron the school bus it's not an issue
It is going into it's 5 th year of operation. I have been happy with it and my kids are doing well, all kids who have graduated have all go ae to Uni And aRe doing well! not to say there are no issues, every school has some.
also my kids attended AISM for 4 years before coming here!- small world! So I can compare for you. We are not the only ex AISM people there
What ages is your daughter?
Let me know if you want some info and we can talk
There are 2 in Sharjah.. The Victorian school or the Australian school, which is the Queensland system.
Australian schools all have different systems depending which state u live in.
Being a Queenslander I still would not send my child to 1 of those schools.Having lived in Singapore and here our schooling is *****!!!
Sounds like u change countries a bit, maybe with DH work, so i I would look at an IB school.
In the airport area there is the Universal American school at Al Badia (Festival City ). There is also JBS in Jumeirah and another American school just opening in Jumeirah 3 area.
JulieH on here is the one you need to talk to about Aussie schools. As far as I know the only Aussie school is in Sharjah, but she may also know other good options as she may have looked into them when choosing schools for her girls. I'll let her know about this thread.
Hi, we left Dubai in 2009 after my daughter had been in JAPS for 4 years. We moved to Malaysia and put her in the Australian School there. They were horrified with her lack of knowledge of the basics, but she thrived during her year there. We now find ourselves with the possibility of returning to Dubai and I would ideally like her to stay in the Aussie school, but if there is any other options around Jumeriah closer to the aiport end of town, I'd love to know about them if anyone can give me a quick rundown
