Hi ladies,
I am driving 200 km daily and have a 4 months old baby at the back. I would like a recommendation on the best 4x4 you think it is. I do will not go off road with; just want something safe for my baby. I am concerned about the petrol cost, speed and the safety features of the car.

http://www.drivearabia.com/ Above website is good for comparing cars. Gives you idea on price, and features etc. If price isn't an issue this is the order of 4x4 I would choose: 1. ML 2. Q7 3. Volvo 4. Prado 5. VW Toureg 6. Range Rover Sport If money is a concern, I would be considering: 1. Pajero (good resale value, and cheap price, not very fuel economical) 2. Ford Explorer (cheap to buy and very good extras, average resale value) 3. Chevrolet Trail Blazer (not too expensive, but not great with the resale value, very comfortable car, and fuel economical though) 4. Subaru Tibeca- now I don't know how these are here, but in Oz they were voted one of the safest cars, so if they're to the same specs they'll be good I have heard Kia has improved, but would steer clear of it myself.

I have a Jeep Patriot. It's lower to the ground than the Cherokee and smaller than for example a Nissan Patrol so easier to park. We get between 450 - 500kms on one tank of petrol which cost about AED 80 to fill. Even though we don't use is for to go off roading it is designed to do well on rough terrain. We have had it now for 7 months and could not be happier. I also has dual airbags and as far as I know it is a very safe car to drive.

As much as we like our Ford Explorer - comfort and safe can't help to notice that it DRINKS a lot. FJ Cruiser awesome but don't feel it's suitable as a family car - the back passenger door opens the other way so when you park the car and wanting to get the little one out of the car seats can feel a little cramp. Would love to try out XC60 .... any idea what the price is now? also 1st of may HAVE to pay 20% downpayment?? A new rule?? Speak to Jimmy the Geordie at Al Futtaim (Volvo), he can put together a 'creative' finance package on a nearly new vehicle with insurance rolled in. We've had our XC60 for 4 months, and I swear it drives better than those block-ey ones like Prado and Pankerjo, and looks better too

thanks for all your replies ladies. It looks like Volvo has lots of good features. However, I am not quite sure about the resale value. Also, I find it kind of expensive. Does anyone know about the services (every 5K or 10K km?) Service is every 10K. My first 60K were free but I don't know how it is now, depends on the deal. Volvo does retain value pretty well maybe not the best retention out there but definitely not bad either.

I know I recommend Hyundai's (as that's the safest vehicle in my price range), but if you can afford a Volvo they are very very safe. My father broke his neck many years ago, and while recovering from surgery that saved his life and his ability to be mobile, the surgeon told him to never drive anything other than a Volvo for the rest of his life. They handle impact (and its affect on your body) better than any other vehicle.

if you want safety you should go for Volvo or Mercedes or VW. I have a Toyota Rav4 which I am happy with, but we recently bought a Mercedes ML (an old one) and I can feel the difference : the ML is much heavier, I think it is safer than Toyota (not to mention the several recalls made by Toyota over the past months regarding safety issues on many vehicles).

Forgot to mention, VW needs to go to the service every 15K km, where most others every 5K. Don't know how easy it is to sell though..

How about re-sale value or ease of re-sale? Do you consider this when buying a new car? German cars or some toyota SUV's (like Prado) seems to retain the most value and easiest to sell. I think VW is not bad either, not sure about Volvo, Kia or Hyundai. yes i get stopped all the time driving people asking to sell my old style patrol, and my mustang. so yes some cars you would be able to get rid really easy some not so. kias are more difficult than toyota/nissan etc. fords are becoming more popular. audis are very expensive cars to repair/service. volvo used to be not many on the roads, but they are getting more popular but they would be easier to sell than a kia but perhaps not so than an nissan

KIA Sportage is the cheapest 4x4 in the market and I am very happy with mine! Cannot really comment on safety features though... kia cars are not the safest of cars, if you want safest then look to the volvos. now that volvos are being made in china are they still considered safe? just wondering.

I had a Ford Explorer several years ago, and, as my Pops said many a day, FORD stands for Fix Or Repair Daily. :) Just sayin'...hope the lot's improved! After the Explorer I bought a Kia Sportage, and it was the best vehicle I had, until I moved to Dubai and bought the Hyundai Tucson a few years ago. The factors I had to consider - safety, cost, fuel, comfort. With the 6 airbags and good safety ratings, the cost which was more in my range than the Volvos and high range Toyotas, good gas mileage, and more comfortable than most smaller SUVs I tried out...the Hyundai Tucson won out. I've had it over 3 years, no mechanical issues, and low maintenance costs. I am considering trading my 2008 model in for a 2011. The body style has gotten sleeker, as well as a few other improved features. Granted a Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage (both Korean made / same company) don't pack the status / image punch of the higher cost vehicles (which I understand don't get me wrong), but for little ol' me and my girl it works great!

wow thanks emmaglow... very useful info... any other suggestions? I hear lots of good about Rav4, FG Cruiser and nissan patrol... I am just worry about the fuel cost fords are good deals, they out of all the dealers give you better warranties/services and i believe in ad at least they are one of the better service centres etc. explorers are good, yes they are big but you soon get used to it. i have an old nissan patrol and its still going strong, built for the sand so cant withstand anything here, done like 211k miles now. depending on your budget old or second hand etc, look towards last years models they usually just tweek little things, unless major change of course. they have just brought out new patrols so maybe deals on them. we have just recently bought a ford flex, very nice inside and 7 seater. we also looked at the volvos, the new xc60 is a bit on the small size but really nice, depending on how much you need to fit in. the xc90 is bigger

http://newsuv.org/industry-news/safest-2011-suvs/ Nearly every major SUV manufacturer had at least one model on the IIHS’ list. One standout was Korean owned Hyundai/Kia, which had a combined four SUV models on the list. For more information, the IIHS has a total of 191 vehicles rated on its website at http://www.iihs.org/ratings/default.aspx. According to the IIHS, the safest 2011 SUVs are: Audi Q5, Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Equinox, Dodge Journey, Ford Explorer, Ford Flex, GMC Terrain, Honda Element, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Patriot (with optional side torso airbags), Kia Sorrento (built after March 2010), Kia Sportage, Lexus RX, Lincoln MKT, Mercedes GLK, Subaru Forester, Subaru Tribeca, Toyota Highlander, Toyota Venza, Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Touareg, Volvo XC60, and Volvo XC90.

Does anyone know about the price of the XC60? Don't know brand new but if you go on here : http://www.automalluae.com/ and select the Volvo with it's respective model you can get an idea of the cerified pre-owned ones.

marblesxx & starfishalicja, Is a Tiguan/Volvo XC60 big enough for 3 adults, car seat+ baby with baby stroller and grocery shopping at the back? Also, from your experience, is the VW/Volvo dealership good and reliable (sales, customer service, etc)? Thanks Speaking for the Volvo I would say yes but with no space to spare in the boot, You can get one more passenger in the back though. What you're discribing I'd go for the XC90 though especially as you can get them as 7 seater with perfectly flush folding seats in the very back for when they're not needed. Service in my eyes is great, quick and efficient (which you don't find here very often). Can't comment on VW, sorry HTH

Yes I hear about it at work yesterday and then I went to a few car dealers and they said it would go into effect on May 1. I guess this is to stop people from getting 300K cars and then ditching them when they cannot pay.

I would go for Volvo or a german 4x4 . I've had my vw tiguan for 3 years now and have had 0 issues, and it was one of the safest small 4x4 when I was searching. It was reasonable too compared to the ones I had my eye on (I love the Q5). If I needed a bigger one, I would go with touareg.

If you are looking for safety and comfort go for a Volvo! In terms of safty there is NO comparison. I've been driving my XC90 for 2,5 years and absolutly love it wouldn't drive anything else with my DD and pup :). You can get 3 car seats in the back without any problem. (for those playdate outings :) ) The XC60 is the smaller version if the XC90 is too big.

I just started my search for a car yesterday. What I have found out is that now I am not looking for a certian car I am looking for the best deal. So far Ford in AD has a great deal on the Ford Explorer last years models. I left my paper at home but it's something like 5 year many many many Km warentry, at least one year insurance, and I think 3 years of service for 100K with cloth seats and 110 for leather and 125 for Eddie Baureer (SP) edition. It's way to big for me but I still may get it for the great deal. OH and FYI, starting May 1 you have to put 20% down on any car bought in the UAE so if you don't plan on putting that much down, buy now. Good luck

I have a Toyota Prado and love it. I've been in several accidents (not my fault :) and find it very safe. It's nice and high so I can see everything. But my favourite thing is the cooler in the console - very helpful to keep baby bottles & water bottles cold and fresh in the summer heat.
