sheba carpets are nice - I have a few. I also have very expensive ones from Mezgazardeh in Dubai mall...but go with some background knowledge and a fixed price in your head and stick with it...

Thank you all! Im not a "poster" as such but really appreciate the input. I went to Central Souq today... really nice! Was having a difficult time finding Sheba Iranian (was in the wrong building - Souk has 2 buildings connected) so called and Rashad came to get us. Been shopping rugs in Istanbul and wanted to get to know Persian and others. Enjoyed seeing his collection... he's bringing the ones my friend and I liked and more to Dubai tomorrow. Thanks again!

Hi Embo. Been here a couple of years and decided to get myself a "Persian carpet" - thinking that a handmade carpet was a persian carpet!! On a carpet discovery - Have since found out that there are many types of handmade carpets and that they are not all Persian. Carpets here suit every budget. In UAE and they are about quarter of the price paid in the west. Dubai carpets particularly from the malls = yes they are more expensive as with every mall - having said that still a lot cheaper than the west. You will find carpets in Sharjah are quite a bit cheaper than Dubai. I did go to the Expo 2 years ago - but in actual fact a lot of the sellers there have shops in Dubai and Sharjah. Expo ended 2 days ago. Interested to see that another lady mentioned the place where I do my carpet shopping. Rashad of Sheba carpets has a great knowledge of the business. So a good recommendation there. Happy shopping. Val

we ended up going there yesterday and most were starting to pack up. Worth going to to see the most amazing and beautiful rugs but nothing in our price range :( seemed to be the top end (10s and 10s of thousands of dirhams) and the bottom end - really poor quality deco rugs style but nothing in between. Will head to Sharjah this week ...

while the odd website is saying Feb 20, I think that is from last year - it runs until 5 Feb according to the signs outside (which I have been driving past every day thinking 'must go in there at some point' - tomorrow is the last day, had better get my act together.

The annual rug show is at the airport expo convention hall at the moment. It will run till February 20th. A large selection of rugs from many of the local dealers. We were there yesterday and almost bought a rug from Tanweel. But we never buy a rug the first time we see it and we'll be debating it over the next two or so weeks. The important thing in buying rugs is to never think of them as investments. They aren't, despite what the dealers will claim. This applies to just about anywhere but especially here when too many shops are asking for second and third rate persian rugs what you would pay for a first rate rug in the US or the UK at a specialist shop or the periodic rug auctions at Christies or Bonhams. If you are just looking for a pretty Oriental style rug, Pakistani rugs are very good value. Most of the persian rugs for sale here are Qum rugs as the Arabs prefer these. Westerners tend to go for the more tribal Persians or the Heriz rugs, but most of what I've seen in Dubai and Sharjah are average quality at best. But if you like something you see and don't mind the price, by all means go ahead and make both your and the salesman's day happy. If you're willing to spend serious money on rugs, there's a fabulous shop on the ground floor of the Dubai Mall called, I think, Miri. Absolutely lovely new rugs woven in the style and techniques of the older Persian rugs. edited by Tallybalt on 04/02/2012

Sorry Spiritgunner but I have to take exception to your remark. Buying anything in any souq is up to the purchaser to make their best price that they are comfortable with. It is also up to the purchaser to do some research and get recommendations. Should the OP take my recommendation at face value? Maybe not. But if the OP asks around she will discover the I do agree about going with someone who has experience, local or not. I agree, I remember a RE agent valuing my house once and saying that really, the definition of value was what the buyer was willing to pay and what the seller was willing to accept. No one else's opinion was relevant. I always have a niggling suspicion that I am paying too much in souks but then, if I think it is a fair price for what it is that I am buying, and I love the item, who cares if the next person pays less? thanks again for your recommendation, we will definitely check out Shebas.

Hi Sue, wondered when you'd show up LOL. No I'm not on commission LOL. But I recommend people who are in a legitimate business who have provided an excellent product and customer service. BTW, adding LOL at the end of all your posts is not LOL Since you are not sat next to me I don't see how you can say that :D LOL !!! (when it's in capitals that means I'm laughing louder) x

But if the OP asks around she will discover the following IMHO. The gentleman who owns Sheba Carpets is just that, a gentleman. The shop has "real" carpets, he sells them as such and has been in business for more than 10 years (that's the limit of my personal acquaintance with him and his cousin and uncle - I have friends who have done business with him longer than that). The carpets are not cheap, because he doesn't carry cheap copies. He also educates his customers and is just as much a gentleman if you walk out without buying as if you walk out with an armload. I do agree about going with someone who has experience, local or not.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I wondered about the carpet fair but thought it was just for trade, will check it out. I also thought of the blue souk but it's great to have a recommendation for a particular shop as there are so many, so thank you marycatherine! Bnbh, we have a ken wood 1600 watt bag less vacuum if you're interested!

If you really want to spend a lot of money on carpets (and even if not), it's always better to go with a local who knows about the subject. Especially carpet business is pretty rough - they rip you off - even the nice gentleman ;-) edited by SpiritGunner on 03/02/2012

Sheba carpets at the Blue Souq in Sharjah (offically called the central souq). There is a wide variety available, Iranian, Afghan, various - ' stan countries and they are all beautiful - and come in a wide variety of sizes and colours. I've been doing business with him for 10+ years, and he is a real gentlemen and trusts his customers. (I've walked out with several thousand dollars worth of carpets to "try" in my home - no problem, but then I know this gentleman and he knows me). However, beware, this is a very good sales technique, once it's in your home they're hard to take back they are so beautiful.

We have bought carpets at Al Madaen Carpets in Satwa, in "Plant Street" just up from the Iranian Hospital. Good selection, negotiable prices and some interesting pieces.

Bought our carpets at Dubai Carpet Fair - next should be in March. So if you're still staying here, I highly recommend that.

Looks like we are heading off on a new adventure and I wanted to buy a nice carpet before we go. Someone suggested Global Village as a good place to go but does anyone have any other suggestions? Of course we have the usual household items to dispose of if anyone is interested!!
