I am looking to add some variety to our garden. I'd like a couple of quick growing trees that will offer some shade over our paved area - what do you recommend? Preferably something that will grow large pots? Also, where is the best place to get pots? Is it worth a trip to the plant souk? Someone said they had seen terracota pots sold on the Hatta road but had no idea how much they were or whether they were suitable for what I need. Sorry if it seems simple but I am a complete garden novice! Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I had a look at a few of my neighbours gardens to see what they had in that didn't look too wild and went with those although the ficus looks quite good and bushy so would offer shade; maybe I'll get one for a big pot like you sugessted Green-ish. Thanks Apricot - Fancy the idea of growing a papaya tree - where can I get the seeds from?

I had very large pots with Ficus trees in them. One variety was 'nitida' (Indian laurel fig?)...can't remember what the other was. Both did really well in full sun, fed regularly and re-potted (back into the same pot) every couple of years. They can be pruned to any desired shape and remain quite thick and bushy if tip-pruned regularly. I had them in those pots for five years and I believe they are still thriving in someone else's garden now. :) NEVER plant a ficus in the ground...unless it has a good 2 acres to itself. ;)

Just want to warn you to avoid the DAMAS (ficus) trees! If you go to the Plant Souk saying you want a fast-growing tree, they will sell you a DAMAS tree and that will be the end of your home's sewer system. This tree's roots grow very fast and invade all areas, will suck all the water from surrounding plants, block up the sewerage. I have also successfully grown papaya from seed, very nice plant and grows fairly quickly without damaging its host garden!

I have grown frangipani tree in a large pot, nice small tree that can take the Dubai heat and has wonderful smelling flowers. Also, I grow papaya (Solo variety) from seed. I just plant the seeds after eating the fluit and hey presto - fast growing, tall hebaceus plant with huge leaves and in 8 months or so fruit! Papaya are best planted in full sun and do not like being transplanted.

I would just go to the plant souk. You can get things even cheaper if you know where their suppliers are but at least they are cheaper than Dubai Garden Centre and Ace Hardware. I don't know what type of tree you should get though...
