Bringing jewelry to OZ: duty & GST?

Question to ladies from OZ:

We are moving to oz,and as per oz Customs, I can only bring in $ 900 worth of jewelry with me...

I've written to the Customs and got the reply that I'd need to fill out the declaration onboard the aircraft for all my jewelry.
I'll not be carrying a huge stock, just a few of my rings and a couple of watches...

Then they said that my jewelry will be detained pending evidence and valuation plus the relevant payment of duty and GST....which I am not in a position to pay now...

I have been wondering what others have been doing while bringing their personal jewelry to oz? Thanks in advance for any advice.

The $900 limit is for gifts you may be bringing into the country...this, they 'ask' you to declare. Up to you if you decide to do this. If you are going there to stay, then the other jewellery is your personal possessions, which you just carry with you. Tell them nothing. The jewellery you have is older gifts you have been given over the years...should they ask..simple.

Wear as much as you can-doubt they's have any idea of the value-have receipts for what you can't wear-or what is obviously new just in case-really can't see the problem unless you had a heap of brand new watches-but even then my husband have brought back multiple new watches for the kids, aunts, uncles etc without anyone saying a word PS My MIL is Arabic and takes her jewellery-all of it-with her whenever she travels and she has quite a lot-by my standards anyway!!!-never had a problem taking it in or out edited by wuffles on 14/02/2011

I wrote to the Customs that all my jewelry is quite old, purchased 10-7 years ago, but they still want me to present the proof of ownership, and apparently pay the duty and GST. How odd!...Not sure what to do now.

News to me too. I always take my jewellery box in my hand luggage and customs have never checked it. Maybe they're talking about newly purchased jewellery.

That's a new one to me too-unless you have a load of watches in new boxes I wouldn't think they's look twice. I always understood if it was for personal use it was fine. I know in the past when my mother in law bought bracelets and such back for wedding/engagement gifts she simply wore the lot! Might be helpful if you have receipts to show it hasn't all been bought prior to your flight maybe

GOSH. I just wear most of mine and carry the rest in my handbag. Of course I'm a citizen, so perhaps they don't check me for "taxable" goods but then again, I don't really see why they wouldn't. You have reminded me though of a story about a friend of a friend who was made to pay tax on an engagement ring purchased overseas. I was never sure if it was an urban myth or not. Sorry I can't be more helpful - I look forward to seeing any responses!
