I'm learning how to cook, and some recipes ask for buttermilk.
I've looked but can't find it.
Does anyone know where to find it, and what brand makes it here?
Is Laban the same thing?

I just squeezed half a lemon in about 125ml of milk and left for 5 mins before adding to my recipe. Worked out fine :)

Sooo trying these. What did you use? Laban or the milk and lemon?

Thank you so so much to the ladies that sent me a helpful reply.. Its much appreciated. Im sorry I wasted your time with a repost, however I was still at the shops, and my blackberry won't let me into searches. I was lucky to get the answer before I left, allowing me to buy everything I needed for dinner that night.

It's groundhog day! Do a search on the forum as this was asked just over a week or so ago. Anyway you can use laban. Buttermilk is also available in Park n shop on Al Wasl Rd and as ScottishGal4 said also Organic cafe.

I would squeeze about half a lemon into 2 cups of milk and leave for 30 mins, then you will have buttermilk. They do occasionally sell it here, I think it would be from Al Safa Dairy or Unikai, one of the local companies. ETA it seems that Unikai now just call their buttermilk Laban drink...oh well.http://www.unikaifoods.com/inner6.html edited by CAPTAIN AMERICA !! on 05/06/2012

Laban is a great substitute otherwise you can make your own with milk and lemon juice-don't now the exact measurements as I've always used laban but i'm certain someone will answer that. If you buy buttermilk then it costs a whole lot more than laban!

Laban is not exact same, but you can use it when a recipe calls for buttermilk.
